This answer is B right? The solutions had C.

It is C, as each circle in A you can go left or right, so each circle is actually two different pathways. Other than that, B and C are identical, so I presume that is where you made your mistake.

The way it was taught in the maths quest was that the degree of A would be (2x4 +1) = 9
which corresponds to B...

ie, there are 4 different paths you can take to get from A to A. If you go left or right, it doesnt matter, you are still taking the same path.

The matrix section row 1, column 1 represents how many ways you can go from A to A. You can do this four ways in option C, as you can use either side of the circle. In Answer B it would 8 as there are four circles.

I am pretty sure that it does matter which way you take the path, is this VCAA or a company exam?
