Title: STUPID STUPID HAZARD PERCEPTION TEST!
Post by: ShortBlackChick on November 23, 2011, 07:38:04 pm
So I did my Hazard Perception Today and the whole time I was doing it I was thinking, I am going to fail this bad!!! Luckily I passed and I got 64% which was more than I expected.

But seriously, I was as pissed as I was relieved when I walked out. What a total waste of time!! It is in no way practical! Its not in any way similar to real life! The screen was grainy and the video was bad quality. How is anyone supposed to feel like its reality that the videos are portraying when it doesnt have the clarity of reality and its 3 Dimensions. Because sitting infront of a screen and clicking a fucking mouse is TOTALLY similar to sitting in a real car and using your instincts!

They call it a Hazard PERCEPTION test but identifying bloody grainy people and cars are not the easiest things to idenitfy, and I dont even wear glasses!!!

Why cant they just take people out on the road, like another road test, and get them to identify hazards when they see them and get them to FREAKEN SLOW DOWN WHEN THEY SEE THEM! And thats another thing- Slowing down. Im pretty sure I got a few of the 'slow when you think is appropriate in relation to the hazard' (not that they say that) wrong. If I see a hazard, I slow when I see it, not when its 'appropriate' in relation to the distance between the hazard and the car. Sue me, for being cautious!

Also, I know my car's capability, in the sense that I know how fast my Mum's car can brake, so I was clicking the button according to what I'm used to. So sometimes I was braking too fast- or too early. The test does not take into account of the differences between cars.

And the CD they recommend you get prior to doing the test, and as practice, does absolutely nothing in helping you prepare. If anything the first section where you have to identify the hazard was the most useful, because it made you think about hazards, but it was very subtle in choosing hazards.

Anyways, I'm so glad I dont have to waste my time on that THING again, and I dont have to stress about it either, but I just needed to rant about it, hence the reason its here :)

Congratulations on feeling like every other P plater ever :D

My favourite was the black screen for night driving and you had to click to slow down!

I remember approaching a speed sign at 60 km/h, with the screen being so low resolution that it wasn't possible to distinguish whether it was a 50 or 60 displayed on the sign. I braked anyway.

Whoever designed that test really needs to look up 'validity' in the dictionary.

I got a situation where you had to overtake a cyclist ascending a hill sort of thing. After a while all the cars on the oncoming side passed, but at the top of the hill there was something, but I wasnt sure if it was a building in the distance or a car. I clicked as soon as the last car passed anyway.

Half the time you couldnt even see what you were slowing down for. There was one question where I thought I was slowing down for a 'T' intersection, but in hindsight it was a bloody roundabout. I mean, it wouldnt have really made a difference, but it would have been nice to know what I was slowing down for!

And the sort of question where you had to click when you could turn right and where  the oncoming side had several lanes, was freaken hard. The one I got, I realised I could have turned at one point, but I'm just way cautious of a driver to go when I dont need to, even though at some instances I can. Why cant they have a "I would go if I was in a hurry" option. Geez

And its not like they have tonnes of resources that you can practise on either. As I mentioned, the CD was crap.
This has 3 useful questions. But its only 3!

If you can play Need For Speed, you can pass the hazard perception test

Dude, NFS should totally count towards your 120 hours.
Although if NFS was the Hazards, I would fail. I'm always smashing into those annoying vans, and in NFSMW the trucks with logs on them.

Its all good :) Good Luck for them. Not to make you anxious, but you might need it. Although it was probably just me that was nervous as hell before, seeing that I also booked my Drive test for 2 weeks time, and I needed to pass.

If you want some practice, just go to those links that I put up in a previous post, and thats about all you can do really.

Thats all I could find/were referred to. Just do them, and get practice on the road LOL

So thats a total of 6 practice Q you could do. Yeah thats helpful right?

And get the Drive Smart CD and do the first part. But dont worry about the parts after that, where they, for some reason unknown to most, decide to test you on your algebraic skills and then make you do this thing where you have to keep a set distance away from the car in front of you. I started doing that part and I was sitting there going 'why the fuck cant I go slow and keep a massive distance between my car and the car infront'

Sorry, the Hazards are all I've been able to think about today. I'm in a raging mood. I walked around the house going 'stupid hazards test. Piece of crap.'

Then again, I am known for my rages/rants about various things, so its not that uncommon for me, but yeah.

Psshh, sorry buddy, road rules dont mean shit in this test. And that is why its so irrelevant to anything!!

Half decent at driving, yeah, you'll pass.
You wont fail but dont expect to do amazingly like in the L Permit test. They show you a video and give you directions on what they want from you. Like for instance, they'll show you driving down a rural road at about 80km p/h, and there'd be something on the road about 100 metres or so away, and you'd be approaching it and a sign in between you and the hazard that cautions you about whatevers on the road.
They pretty much want you to click, when you think you should slow down. See, your supposed to slow down when your at the sign, but I know I got a couple wrong because I clicked before that.  So you can't click to early for everything either.
And there are some scenarios when you dont click at all, because you cant do what the ask you to.

The pass mark is 54%, Im guessing because its pretty hard. I got 64% which exceeded my expectations considering I expected to fail, and they ask you 28 Questions/scenarios.

Wait so we're suppose to brake when we see a sign? lol wanna give me any answers :P
Title: Re: STUPID STUPID HAZARD PERCEPTION TEST!
Post by: ShortBlackChick on November 24, 2011, 12:07:58 am
No well, probably not always, but it depends on whatevers' happening. In the situation that I outlined the sign probably indicated something about the unknown substance on the road, so you'd assume you'd brake, because you're supposed to.4
See, the thing is, the pictures are so unclear that you cant tell what the signs are saying. So its pretty much guesswork, I guess.

LOL buddy, I would give you answers if I knew them myself!

Hazard test: fail on first, computer crashes on second, then I pass.
Real test: succeed and get told there is not much in ways of improvement, I'm very aware and careful, and maybe even the best driver they have had in months.

Can anyone see what is wrong here?

I got 92%. The graphics were so good it's comparable to BF3. The only thing helpful that I found was the truck and the bike behind it ^^v, other than that everything else was o___O

I killed the motorcyclist.
I haven't killed a motorcyclist in real life.

Difference perceived --> Perception test passed.

If so, wtf, why didnt I do that!!! Thats awesome.

Not that I condone hitting a motorcyclist by making a right turn too early.

Yeah the supervisor said that's the highest she's seen and this one was in sunshine vicroads which is pretty busy everyday. Hopefully I didn't sound too boastful though . But yeah, I think I got two wrong which was probably due to the tram which I couldn't see if it was braking or not and apparently I didn't click when I was supposed to turn.

Holy Shit.

I hated the colour light questions, the ones where there was no hazard and the ones where there was a puddle on the road and you could only see it when the car infront of you went on it.

Anyone else get so close to the screen that their nose was practically touching it?

Although I have quite good eyesight I was certainly struggling to see things.

To me the test was quite ambiguous, I answered 2 of the 4 practice questions wrong for clicking to early when I saw hazards... would've thought it was the safer thing to do, I guess not...

Not to worry, pulled out ~75% (can't remember that long ago) and passed my drive test :)

Good luck for those who haven't done it yet ;)

What's wrong with slowing down early or whatever if you see a hazard? Our saftey > slowing down the traffic.....
But then again everyone would pass the test. They should just scrap it lol

Exactly!!!!!! Do they want cautious drivers or people who drive based on the lessons of some stupid stupid test.
You know, I dont think half the people on the roads would pass the Hazards test. I was going somewhere today and my mum was driving, and it was raining too. There were puddles on the road, and the cars infront of us went through them, and did my mum, at any point, slow down?
No she did not. And nothing happened either. We didnt crash and die, and we arrived alive, albeit me a bit stressed from my Mums crazy driving

There's a reason year1 P platers have the highest accident risk...as soon as there's nobody in the passenger seat watching you, you'll be accelerating through those puddles!

That makes a lot of sense.
LOL I reakon I'd be the one that would impulsively swerve into the next lane and crash into another car.
My driving instructor was saying something about some program that talks about the change from having a supervisor to being an independent driver called Keys2drive? Is that even helpful?
