Title: So many subjects.. how do you guys choose!
Post by: Ematuro on January 18, 2012, 09:03:37 pm
So I got into Melbourne university Commerce and I'm up to the subject selection part of the enrollment process... I had a look at the commerce subjects in the handbook and there are hundreds! It doesn't help that I don't know what I want to major in either... (when do we have to decide on our majors by??)
I do know however, that I won't be doing actuary, management or business majors.. so any tips on what subjects I should select that would allow me to choose from any of the other majors (including double majors) when the time comes?

Also, how much will AAD actually help? I can't really imagine it being super useful seeing as there'll be so many people and so little advisors (I think?).. But I might be wrong so asking for advice here! Thanks :)

Not a commerce student myself, but the way I chose my subjects was to find out the prerequisites for subjects required for my major, then seeing if those subjects had prereqs etc.

Other than that, read the subject overviews, and do what you enjoy :)

AAD will help when you attend intro lectures or Demo lectures for finance 1, accounting, etc you will see exactly what the course is about

As for your subjects, first you pick a stream (general, actuarial, business)
It will automatically assign you your 3 compulsory subjects
ECON10004 Introductory Microeconomics (Semester 1)
ECON10003 Introductory Macroeconomics (Semester 2)
ECON10005 Quantitative Methods 1 (choose a semester - most people do it in #1)

Now, you need to choose commerce electives (minimum of 1) and breadths (maximum of 3 breadth subjects at level 1)

I know its really early but, what Majors might you possibly be thikning about addressing the notion of considering of contemplating an attempt at? :P

Take first year commerce electives that match up with majors
ie: Finance = FNCE10001 Finance 1
Management = MGMT10002 Managing and Leading Organisations
i dont know the rest the handbook is useful for this

also use the handbooks for breadth, theres too many to talk about here.

In the handbook, look up major you might want to do
In your 3rd year, (wow ages away) you must pick THREE subjects to achieve that major
In order to do these subjects you need to have pre-requisite subjects in 2nd year
.........and in order to do THOSE subjects there could be pre-requisites in 1st year :O

Look all the pre requisites up in the handbook and see if your first-year plan will suit your second-year plan and ultimately your third year and major plan!

Sounds huge right now, but it will work out. Good luck!

Wow thanks for the informative post. About picking your stream.. is general just like all the other majors that aren't actuary/business?

Well why not to a bunch of subjects in year 1 that can provide a wide variety of majors, that's basically what i'm doing for science I mean biology subjects and chem subjects allow you to major in genetics, human structure and function, biochemical sciences etc.

You cant really do that with commerce - well it depends on what major you're interested in, if you want accreditation for accounting or actuarial you need to follow a pretty rigid course structure.

Yeah, depends on what you want to do at the end, my friend kept his options open with commerce at the first year though.

Doing accounting in first year will be enough prereq for finance in 2nd year, so that alone will keep 2 majors open. I don't think a major in management requires anything other than OB, which is a core subject in second year. So other subjects that may be good are principles of marketing and PBL (as breadth) for accounting.

If you are terribly unsure, then something like:

economics 1&2, accounting(2or3 subjects), marketing, PBL, QM1
