Im doing straight commerce first year.
1. Out of the 6 core units which units actually need the text books, because most of the lecturers are stressing that you need it. I don't want to waste if i am only going to use it once or twice.
2. Where can i find the course adviser ?
3. What the difference between a "single accounting and finance major" and a "double accounting and finance major"
4. I want to take korean classes as some of my electives. Do they allow this for the first year ? Because i was reading somewhere that confused me on this.

Well, not sure about commerce specifically, but there's info on career counselling here:

Opps meant to say course adviser. But thanks anyway.

This varies a bit from year to year, but this is what I did when I completed these units last year:
AFC1000 Principles of accounting and finance: Bought and used the book for the tutorial questions and reading.
BTC1110 Business law: The exam was open book so if there's any book you'd need it'll be this one. When I did it sem 2 last year you could only bring in Concise Aus Commercial Law, but the sem before me could bring in any book. Personally I found Sweeney and O'Reilly's Law in Commerce more helpful than CACL, but the lecturer likes to vary the assessments (open book/open book with conditions) from semester to semester. I'd suggest you get it.
ECC1000 Principles of microeconomics: I used the textbook for diagrams (Economics 6th Edition), but I reckon the lecture slides and the diagrams that the lecturer drew was the most helpful. You can buy the lecture slides for $10 at the bookshop, that's what I used the most.
ETC1000 Business and economic statistics: Mostly lecture notes, but I was really lazy and personally stats is really, really not my thing @_@ I did buy the book though.
MGC1010 Introduction to management: When I did it, the essays I wrote (closed book exam) were hugely based on the textbook. The sem after me was an open book exam so if it is, I'd say get the book. But I'm not sure what it is this sem :/
MKC1200 Principles of marketing: I didn't have to do this unit, so I'm not sure sorry.
Hope that helps, sorry for the essay xD Out of all the books, I think Business Law was the one where I needed my textbook the most, and I think that's available 2nd hand atm.
