I'm not really sure but I think it can eventually be transferred to LTM. Elaborative rehearsal is more efficient for retaining information so I know that much.

It's possible, and that's what atkinson-shiffrin suggested, that by just repeating the info over and over you are processing it into long-term memory.
however extensive research findings have shown that with maintenance rehearsal that is NOT always the case.
rehearsal is used to basically "get around" the duration of 30 secs in STM.
Maintenance rehearsal does not always mean that the info is processed in LTM. For example (:P) - If you remember a telephone number, and you repeat it over and over and over again until you dial it on the phone, and after you've finished talking and hung up, you may not remember the telephone number anymore.
Maintenance rehearsal does not always guarantee encoding into LTM, however elaborative rehearsal is a much more efficient method of rehearsal. (where you encode information into LTM semantically (meaningfully), rather than phonetically (like maintenance rehearsal).
