Title: Ideal way of completing the exam?
Post by: Deceitful Wings on May 20, 2012, 09:21:41 pm
Hey everyone,

What approach would you use during reading time when sitting a chemistry practice exam (or for the real thing)?

I still haven't found a way that suits me, but for bio last year I would thoroughly read Short answer, make sure I know everything, then go to multiple choice and read through that. If i still had time, I would complete the multiple choice in my head, so when it came to writing time; i would cruise through the multiple choice and focus on short answer.

But since chem requires calculations, I cant really do that and reading time is pretty important lol

so what is your method? :P
and for people who do physics, what is your approach? :P

Thanks!

Take note of any units that require conversion such as milligrams to grams. Identify theoretical questions that you're unsure of and ponder them like you've never pondered before. Phrase your answers as sentences in your head so that you don't waste time doing this during writing time. Do as many multiple choice questions that don't require calculations. Identify any 'hidden' steps that will be required in questions that do require calculations. Breath. Don't panic if you think there's a question that you can't do, because you probably can. Observe graphs very carefully.

I read through all the MC first, then read the SA backwards. Then I do SA in the actual order, then multiple choice. I also asterisk any questions I'm unsure about.

then read the SA backwards.

Can I ask why?

No you cannot.

Haha nah, it's something I just found that works for me. Probably something to do with how you recall the beginning and end of a piece of information well, but the middle not so much. So that way there really is no middle.

Shit, why do I read SA backwards?

I thought people who use this technique is so that by the time they finish reading, they still have the 'most recent' info clear in their minds when doing the SA questions from the beginning to the end.
