Title: PSYCH Exam question: Rene Descartes theory of consciousness?
Post by: MichelleVo on June 05, 2012, 11:49:24 pm
This is a short-answer question in the psychology exam that is worth 2 marks.
What would be the best way to answer it?

Explain the interaction of the mind and body in consciousness as proposed by René Descartes.

ANSWER:
- Mind/soul is a non physical /spiritual entity, whereas the body is a physical entity.
- Mind and body interact via the brain's pineal gland and can therefore influence one another.

Second one. First one doesn't explain how they interact just says the characteristics of mind and body as described by descartes

Its a 2 mark question, so I would assume you would have to distinguish between the 2 entities first (mind=spiritual, body=physical/flesh). THEN that they interact through the Pineal Gland

I'd put both points in my answer. You might want to also mention Dualism to be safe.

Also mention how mind can influence body, and body can influence mind.
