Hey guys, i need to pick some breadth subjects for the science course.
I'm interested in either finance or microeconomics.
Which one do you think would be easier for someone with no past commerce experience??? and which is actually more interesting??

Microeconomics is interesting and isn't really hard to get a H1 if you put a fair bit of effort into doing it. Although I haven't done Finance 1, my friend who did it last semester hates the subject because of its difficulty.

I did microeco this semester, and with no commerce background I found it fairly interesting and quite easy to go well (in assignments and exam hopefully) if you read the book and do tutorial sheets. I don't do finance, but my mate did it and said it was boring due to "plug and play" maths formulas, but that's just one persons opinion.

hehe i dont think so!!! I still need to go over all the lectures again, which hopefully will be done by tomorrow :P
Struggling with the galvanic/electrolytic cells :(
but o-chem is pretty straight forward and FUN!

Edit: those bits on ligands/coordination complexes seem really out of place compared to the rest of the course. Looks like second year chem to me not what you'd expect in fundamentals :(

I hate the functional group thing in chem but I totally get the galvanic/ electrolytic stuff now woop

I'm also a Science person who did Microeco as breadth. A lot of the subject matter is quite interesting, although the lectures aren't presented particularly well and I skipped more than half of them. Tutes are very good for understanding material though and as said previously, a lot of it is very logical and it is one of the easier subjects to get a H1 in.
Online resources are excellent too. Don't buy the textbook.

Ive done both of these as breadh (Intro eco in semester one last year, Finance in the summer)
Finance 1: There's a very good post in the subject review thread that hits the nail on the head IMO. The most tedious subject imaginable. A continuous bombardment of plug and play formulas. Nauseating assignments.
Intro Eco: Enjoyed this subject very much, although part of that was due to having a wonderful lecturer (Jeff Borland) who I don't think takes the subject anymore. Much more interesting concepts in this subject; I thought Game Theory part of the course was especially interesting. Tutes were more interesting aswell, wasn't just doing a question sheet every week, they varied it with a few games/activities that helped to reinforce the concepts.
In summary, if you want the highest mark, probably Finance (but they're both easy to score high in)
If you want the more interesting subject, don't think twice about it IMO, clearly Eco.

I did both and I would definitely say micro (maybe I'm biased because it is my main interest).
Finance, particularly the first half, I found reallyyyyyyy boring. It does get more interesting towards the end and will give you some good life skills (I am happy that I can now understand the finance sections of the newspaper) but the assignments are stupid (4 marks out of 10 are allocated to "originality" and "presentation" - it's finance :L ). A lot of people that I know that did finance as breadth didn't enjoy it. It's probably something you really have to be interested in otherwise it may just all go over your head.
Micro, although I think less real-world based (there is a case studies book with real-world examples but you mainly just learn the theory) is a lot more interesting. The textbook is also a lot better to read than finance. Micro will help you with problem-solving skills and the exam is much more about knowing how to apply the concepts than finance.
And in terms of having no commerce experience, again micro would be better I think. Finance is for beginners too but sometimes I felt that if I had done accounting I would understand a lot better.
