As Enwiabe has mentioned in this thread:
Announcing the pre-order for 4 more ATARNotes Study Guides!
my book will be ready of shipping on July 25th. I have, as of now, completed writing all the questions and am currently writing model solutions and a marking scheme. I have not started detailed solutions, but I anticipate that I will start these as soon as tomorrow. Mao is slugging the whopping task of doing the model and detailed solutions for the exams
In this thread, feel free to ask me any questions about the book!
Just some quick notes:
The tests are as follows (time in minutes, no of marks):
AOS1 Test 1: Reaction Kinetics 1 (40, 29)
AOS1 Test 2: Reaction Kinetics 2 (40, 23)
AOS1 Test 3: Equilibria 1 (50, 37)
AOS1 Test 4: Equilibria 2 (50, 40)
AOS1 Test 5: Equilibria 3 (50, 40)
AOS1 Test 6: Industrial Chemistry 1 (TBC) --> we are currently splitting this test up into 4 tests, one for each chemical
AOS2 Test 1: Energy Sources 1 (40, 32)
AOS2 Test 2: Thermochemistry 1 (50, 39)
AOS2 Test 3: Thermochemistry 2 (40, 22)
AOS2 Test 4: Electrochemistry 1 (40, 30)
AOS2 Test 5: Electrochemistry 2 (50, 36)
AOS2 Test 6: Electrochemistry 3 (60, 42)
Exam 1: 1 hour 30 minutes - 20 MCQ + 8 SAQ to a total of 83 marks
Exam 2: 1 hour 30 minutes - 20 MCQ + 7 SAQ to a total of 82 marks
Exam 3: 2 hours 30 minutes - 20 MCQ + 9 SAQ to a total of 120 marks
Differences between the Unit 3 book and this one:
- this book has an explicit marking scheme along with model answers instead of simply model answers
- the tests are also graded in difficulty
- exam 3 has the nastiest qn I could think of (it was a concept I had to learn in Olympiad Chem, but its a concept you could derive from VCE chem knowledge)
Similarity?
Exam 3 is still the challenge exam. :P
-
Just an update, we are getting quite close to finishing this book - questions and model solutions have been completed, and we are about 1/3 of the way into detailed solutions!
Don't forget to preorder guys! :D
Again, in this thread, feel free to ask me any questions about the book!
-
hey. i just pre-ordered physics and chemistry unit 4 books
and in the one of the description box i wrote in the message reference and im just wondering if thats right... haha
cheers
-
Update: I am VERY close to finishing the book - all questions and model solutions finished, all detailed solutions to tests are finished and detailed solutions to short answer section of exams 1 and 3 finished!
-
Update: Finished.
Waiting on Enwiabe and Mao to edit and compile. Well on track for July 25th release date.
-
Congratulations Thushan!

Are you human?

How long is the book?

How long is the book?
Was going to be 450 pages A4, but that was entirely unfeasible from a physics (too large, would deteriorate too easily) and cost standpoint. We didn't remove any of the content, but we're printing the detailed solutions 2 to a page so it can fit into a book that we can afford to print :P Will come out to around 300 pages

Proof copy printed. 308 physical pages (466 pages if we didn't do model and detailed solutions 2toapage).
Will go to press tomorrow! :D

Thursday afternoon the books will be printed and given to enwiabe, and he will start posting then. Envisage the books to come some time early next week (to you by post that is).

If you want to line up, the best place is the Melbourne Convention Centre on Friday at 10 AM. You will get personally signed copies in ATARNotes branded bags as well as other goodies.
(Worth wagging school for this :P)

Sunday isn't good enough - you need to camp outside the Melbourne Convention Centre the night before with your tent and chair like the fanboys do with Apple.
-
Wow - I didn't expect such a response, I'm quite touched...! Glad to know that people feel as though they're benefiting :)

It's out! Finally!

It's out! Finally!
thushan, based on ur memory, the day i met u for the first time, was that the first series of autographs you did ? or... before that too ?

Hey is it still possible to pick this book up from somewhere or do we have to buy online?
Come to our stand (stand 25, down at the back) at the Herald Sun expo tomorrow or Sunday :)
-
If we can't show up tomorrow or on Sunday, will this book be available at any book shop?
-
I believe JP Books has them
http://www.jpbooks.com.au/
EDIT: Only showing Unit 3 book atm, but I'm sure the Unit 4 book will pop up with time
-
Thanks man, I'll buy it once it's available. :)
-
We might also be able to arrange pick up in the Glen Waverley or Caulfield areas, or the state library
-
Thushan might also be able to do a sale at Monash Clayton, cause he's there like every day :P

Hey Thushan, I have some questions about the book
1. In test 3
Q2a) determine the equilibrium yield of HI in this reaction.
The ans is 0.316*100/0.4= 79%
Because the percentage of yield is how much reactants converted to products so I do the other way
= 0.316(1+127).100/0.2*2+2*127*0.2= 79%
Is it right or wrong?
Q2f) the ans: the mark should be awarded if "neither" is circled. But there is no answer given as "neither"
I think it should be "no change"
Q2g) the ans: Dave's container must be of a higher temperature (...) the reaction is exothermic and at higher temperature K does
decrease, hence the yield decreases
But the question gives that delta H>0 so it should be endothermic and Jo's container must be at higher temperature, not Dave's
2. In test 5
Q2d) the explanation and the model answer is different?!?
The sample answer is n(CH3COOH)final=n(CH3COOH)initial-n(CH3COOH)react
= 0.505*0.990+n(HCl) ?!?
= 0.500-0.0100*10.0=0.600 mol ?!?
The explanation: n(CH3COOH)final=n(CH3COOH)initial+n(CH3COOH) produced
=0.5+0.01*10=0.600 mol
Iam so confused when reading the sample answer and the explanation :-\

AOS1T3 Q2a) --> Your answer is fine.
AOS1T3 Q2f) --> Thanks, that's what I meant.
AOS1T3 Q2g) --> Mistake already rectified, see errata thread.
AOS1T5 Q2d) --> good spot. it's meant to be:
The sample answer is n(CH3COOH)final=n(CH3COOH)initial+n(CH3COOH)produced
= 0.505*0.990+n(HCl) ?!?
= 0.500+0.0100*10.0=0.600 mol ?!?

Hey I ordered both the physics and chemistry ATARNOTES books online on the 28th of July. I still haven't received it, just wondering shouldn't I have gotten it by now?

Hey I ordered both the physics and chemistry ATARNOTES books online on the 28th of July. I still haven't received it, just wondering shouldn't I have gotten it by now?
Hmmm, I ordered mine on the 24th of July and I received mine a few days ago. I'm sure it'll come around soon enough, wait a week, and it should be there.

I have almost waited a week, I guess I just have to wait and hope it comes soon...

Talked to enwiabe. Turns out he had posted it. Looks like I have to kick Australia Post up its ass. Nah, i'll let the rajinator do that :P
-
yeah i sent a PM to enwiabe, but do you think it's Australia Post who have failed to send it or enwiabe?
-
All books have been dispatched, so it's probably Australia Post
-

Hey TheRajinator, Australia Post quotes between 1 and 4 business days for sending within Australia. I have only ever known them to be efficient (taking 1 to 2 business days on each parcel). Yours was shipped out on Tuesday night, so it should have arrived by now. If it doesn't arrive by let's say Wednesday of next week, I'll investigate what has happened.
-
Okay thanks for confirming enwiabe, :)
