Title: Fundamentals of Chemistry, I have been allowed entry into Chemistry 2?
Post by: Starlight on June 28, 2012, 03:13:20 pm
I got a score of 80 and was sent an email to say I may enter chemistry 2 If I wish. I know a lot of people have said with my score it's probably wiser going into chemistry 1 next sem.. What do you guys think?

well if you continue with chem1 then you'll have to do chem2 in summer which means covering the content in a very small amount of time (4 weeks i think) which may be difficult. I don't think chem1 is a perquisite for chem 2 either, so I would just go for it :)

But then again i'm a first year student too, so maybe in this case you should wait to see what someone with more/similar experience has to say.

Yeah I think it's around 4 weeks or something, but it's only one subject to worry about in that respect. Problem is i'd have to revise over these holidays, and i'm not that interested in doing that. Never had an opportunity to advance in a subject before :S

I think that you need to consider the possibility that always comes with skipping ahead, at least in my experience! You'll need to push yourself to keep up with your peers. If you want another 80, you will probably have to work a great deal harder than you did this semester, or consider the possibility of getting perhaps a H2B/H2A in Chem 2. I don't think there is any risk of you failing, or they wouldn't have offered you the chance to advance.

I know what I said before about considering this wisely, but now that I am thinking about it the overlap between Chem 1 and Chem 2 doesn't seem to be overly huge. How much organic chemistry would you have covered in Fundamentals? I guess another thing to consider is the GAMSAT, presuming you may be planning on doing it. Most of Chem 2 organic chem is trapped in the GAMSAT but if you're not already comfortable with organic chemistry you might want to consider doing the Chem 1 Organic Chem stuff first before you jump in to Chem 2 which is a lot more intricate.

The physical chem stuff from Chem 1 is mostly self contained and to be honest I don't remember much of Inorganic Chem from Chem 1 and the overlap with Chem 2, perhaps somebody else can lend a hand.

^ I might PM you the stuff we did in fundamentals, organic chemistry wise :)

Chem 1 is a prerequisite for Chem 2, unless you get a sufficiently high score in Fundamentals of Chem, which El2012 was good enough to achieve, well done :)

I was in the same position as you in first year, and I decided to do Chem 2, and while I don't think I went as well in Chem 2 as I would've if I did Chem 1, I don't really regret it. It wasn't that bad doing Chem 2 without doing Chem 1, though you'll need to learn certain things yourself (like bloody Chair conformations that came up in the exam as apart of a question, and I had to completely skip it).

Fundamentals covers the basic organic chemistry, but I didn't have too much trouble with picking up the organic chemistry taught in Chem 2.

The main thing I think I had trouble with during Chem 2 was that I had to think a bit more about basic things that hadn't become second nature to me yet.

And you've got all the smart kids on AN to help you out with anything and everything. Just look at those scores ^-^ Go for it

Thanks :)  Yeah heard a lot about chair conformations. I might have to access chemistry 1 lecture notes if I do chem 2. Hopefully they dont give me dodgy lecture times if I do chem 2. Would it be a disadvantage doing chem 2 on the summer holidays if I were planning to do the gamsat?

OMG I HAVE HUGE COMPUTER SUMMARY NOTES FOR CHEM 1, you are in luck. I can send them to you only not right now as I am meant to be at a friends at 4pm (ie now) and she will crack it if she finds out I am late due to VN.

They're lacking some pictures though because I drew them in >: PM me your email if you want to see

Only disadvantage I could think of is that it's 4-6 weeks of your holidays that you could've been studying the GAMSAT, doing Chem 2 instead. Though obviously the Chem 2 stuff is useful for the GAMSAT too, so there's two ways of looking at it.

I honestly think if you spent enough time revising Chem 1 over this holidays (working through ChemCAL for chem 1, and using mavisgibbons' notes that she's wonderfully offering), you'll be fine. It just means you have to work harder during Chem 2 :)

So.. I just handed in the form then to the ESPC. I'll probably have to go again because I have no idea what I have to do for timetabling now :P

I was looking at the Fundamentals of Chemistry exam, and seriously, you guys know everything. You've honestly already hit the point of enlightenment to continue on in Chemistry 2. The only difference is that all the kids who have done VCE and Chemistry 1 have a little bit more practise answering questions, so we've seen more "styles" of questions, so to speak. You won't have any difficulty understanding it whatsoever - we're on par with knowledge, it's just that everything would come a bit more naturally to us because we've got more experience.

Honestly, go for it, you don't want to be studying it on the holidays, do you?

Haha i'm listening to chem 1 lectures atm, in case there's anything i've missed. 2 a day so it's not too bad.
