Title: Issues with Tutorial with Turnout
Post by: thushan on July 28, 2012, 07:36:18 pm
This makes me feel sad. Some people are consistently turning out each week, but the turnout has decreased dramatically. I think it might be because Skype is screwing up often, but it could also be coz I'm crap.

So I'm reconsidering now. Answer the poll and tell me your ideas.

BTW Tute 6 is running now.

(mod edit: accidentally removed poll, put back on with same options)

Class of 2012. Do you really think this is true? BECAUSE IT DAMN WELL ISN'T!

Back in my yr12, if I knew someone who got 99.95, International Chem Olympiad Medalist, Premz (50) in Chem, wrote two huge and awesome books, has given multiple lectures, is a respected AN mod, was smart enough to decline UoM Biomed for the Monash MBBS, is a genuine good guy, AND is giving free help on Skype, I would have jumped at the chance.

Seriously, give away a few more Sat nights for this, it's definitely worth it :)

Personally I think it would be much better to make weekly video tutorials and post them on YouTube, kinda like what Psyccounting (http://www.youtube.com/user/Psyccounting) does. It not only helps the wider VCE community but also promotes AN as well. I'd much prefer this then attending tutorials via skype at a fixed time. :)

Lol when u said class of 2012, i thought, 'whats that?' never heard anyone refer to us as that yet xD

1. Thushan, stop beating yourself up, its not because you're crap. Quite obviously.

My personal reason for not coming on is, these tutes are like tsfx. I'm behind enough as it is at school, so when i come on, it's no help to me because i have no idea what anyone's talking about.
They are excellent, yes, but they are more helpful to the super genius among us who want to extend themselves. :) if i was actually ahead in the course like i was last semester, i would.
But maybe that's just me lol. It probably is. Mehehe.

P.s. i clicked on this thread because i saw 'turnout' and thought ballet. :D

Keep running the tute, Thushan!!! The tute helps us a lot with learning new knowledge and deep understanding.
We always appreciate what you did for us.

If you have no idea about what anyone's talking about, just ask. I did it most of the time if I dont understand the probs. And thats the way I learn.

I'm not genius but I'm happy to join in because the tute is about learning, not about competing and who is better. When you study at school, the teacher may not have lots of time to help you solve the questions. In the tute, you have plenty of chances. Everyone gives their ideas and explains clearly. Dont be afraid of answering question wrong. Because from these mistakes, you will be better at Chem. And the tute is fun too :)

Just out of curiosity guys, how many of you aren't coming because you forget? (or similar)

Do you think it would be beneficial to setup a calendar which includes the dates and times of the tutorials for chem and others such as physics? Or maybe a notification reminder system which you could sign up for?

In the end these tutorials are for your benefit, so it would be great to get some feedback and ideas from you guys :)

Also, to the couple of people wanting to cancel it on the poll, why? Any feedback would probably help Thushan to help you better during these tutes :)

I clicked the wrong button (by accident) X_x. I don't know how to change my vote!

Also~~ just from being in the chat for a few minutes today, I actually realised that the tutes aren't that bad, DON'T cancel them! I really enjoy them (I mostly lurk, but still, they're great to read).

I can't make it to the actual tutes because I'm usually getting home from Melbourne, but the transcripts are very helpful and sometimes entertaining, they make me think of questions that I wouldn't ahve thought of otherwise, and are actually amazing! So please keep doing them, or change them to a time I can do!

I know right. If Thushan is crap, wtf am I? I wish crap for me means a 99.95 ATAR because that would be absolutely freaking awesome.

I might as well link everything.

Tute 5 was called off.
Tute 4 is here: Tutorial 4
Tute 3 is here: Tutorial 3
Tute 2 is here: Tutorial 2 (and Bhootnike's summary)
Tute 1 was discussing how they should operate.

No transcript for Tute 6 yet. I was only there for less than half of it, so my logs are incomplete.

Thushan, you really shouldn't take it personally :( I can't believe you called yourself 'crap' (but I think it just speaks to your modesty- hence why, in my opinion, your the perfect model student). I strongly recommend you keep the tutorials scheduled for 7:30pm saturday, or at a time where students are most unproductive, such as friday night. I say this because, the atmosphere of the tutorials seem some what relaxed and casually comfortable- thus, students would be able to casually enter your skype tutorials and spend their most unproductive, unmotivated hours productively. I have to be honest, if most people are like me, the idea of social chatting, no matter how educational it is, seems uncomfortable and unnerving. Hence, my reasons for suggesting you keep your lectures between low-peak days such as friday and late saturday night.

In addition to all that I have recommended, I also suggest that you proceed along with delivering lecture notes no matter how low the turn out. For example, say if even one person, or worst case scenario, no one turns up, you continue to deliver your lecture notes anyway, and later you post the transcript up upon the forum. I recommend this because students can then easily download the lecture notes and revise them as well. Also, this will send a clear message to everyone that you are waiting for no one, and that the show will continue regardless of circumstance. This will discourage anyone from missing any more of your lectures for fear of being left behind, and further more, will perpetuate the idea that your lectures are 100% formal and serious, and therefore should not be taken lightly.

Please don't stop Thushan! Your notes are awesome and really helpful. I personally can't make saturday [tutor], but the transcripts make up for it.

And I concur with t35t, you are actually an invaluable resource :)
