So, who's coming on Sunday and who's helping out?
Definitely recommend any yr10-12s to come around, it helps enormously with course decision making and it's always good to grab lots of uni freebies :D
If you happen to come around to the med dep and see me, say "hi", I'll be that Indian kid in a lab-coat and black steth :)
Look forward to seeing some of you ;D
-
Will be in the Engineering Department / trying to blend in as a year 12 trying to steal free stuff.
-
I'll be there :)
Going there mainly to check out the campus, and talk to science faculty.
-
Unfortunately, didn't get the Physics lab rat position :(
May drop by to gawk
-
Do we just turn up and walk around or do we need to register or something?
What are the freebies, and should I bring a bag? :P
-
No, afaik, you don't need to register to attend Open Day
You can bring a bay, but I reckon some faculties will have their own bags
-
I'm looking forward to
free pens learning about university life and courses. Last year the engineering section was pretty kickass, but I had trouble finding any of the really interesting science stuff. Does anyone know if the arts faculty is going to be doing anything cool?
@pi
Are you officially there with med? :)
Moderator action: removed real name, sorry for the inconvenience
@Surgeon
Nah, no need to register just rock up on the day.
They do give you a library bag like the ones from primary school with course outlines and stuff, but they're a pain in the ass to hold around a bit so bring a backpack to put them in.
-
I might turn up and bum around with MCJAF, but honestly I probably won't.
-
@pi
Are you officially there with med? :)
Yep, I got a special T shirt too, but I think the labcoat + steth combo is the more mainstream way based on the last few years :)
Moderator action: removed real name, sorry for the inconvenience
-
I'll be there since i live on campus :P
FREE STUFF!!!!!!!!!
-
Come and find out more about IT courses which are probably the best courses in Monash!! :P
-
ill be there in the eng department
-
Don't forget to say hi to me, I'm going to be an Open Day Ambassador near the biomed / med faculty. Just spot the short asian guy with a special blue Monash Ambassador hoodie. :D
-
FREE STUFF! I'm in!
:D
-
I'll be there! Keen as beans for the med department ;D
-
lmao are these things worth going to for year 10 students?
-
I'll be doing my Optics (YUCCKKK) lab in the first year physics labs from 1-4pm. Will probably be forced to wear the horrible long sleeved science t-shirt. Feel free to have a chat with me about aero/sci stuff and also bitch about how shit optics is. Me and my friend are the only 2nd years doing the optics lab's as far as I know.
Also Eng. Faculty have reasonably good pens so make sure that you grab a bunch of those.
Unfortunately, didn't get the Physics lab rat position :(
May drop by to gawk
Bad luck man. Doing a lab on Open day is an almost guaranteed full marks (for first year anyway) unless you really bomb out on the lab.
-
lmao are these things worth going to for year 10 students?
Yep, helps with careers for sure :)
-
I'm coming with my friends to have a look! My heart is set on Melbourne though: see if you can convince me otherwise.
-

Oh trust me, my heart was super-glued down underneath the buildings of Melbourne. Now, I really am not sure anymore.

I guess I'll leave all of the uni open days thinking "omgaah I wanna go there!"
-
I'm coming to check out the Pharmaceutical Science campus
-

You can register to win a mac: http://monash.edu/openday/#register

I'm going to Clayton this Sunday to check out the psych faculty.
-
Remember pk-607, if you're really keen, ask more about the Psych Honours Degree we have at Monash.
-
Haha I was so keen on Science at Melb as well during year 12. So glad I didn't choose it, Monash rulez
-

Im keen to see how its like.
I've always imagined it to be a deserted place!
really hope there's a few desi's at mannix college :P i hope you were wrong about that! :D
haha

Trust me man, it's not a deserted place. It's like a mini city in the south eastern suburbs, with lots of trees that surround it. Monash is pretty cool, but yeah, i'm biased since I'm a Monash City local. Come down at Open Day and ask us anything, you won't be disappointed (I hope)
-
I'm coming with my friends to have a look! My heart is set on Melbourne though: see if you can convince me otherwise.
Do you want to do Medicine? Monash.
Do you want to do Engineering? Monash.
Do you want to do a double degree of any sort? Monash
Do you want to be cool? Monash :P
Otherwise, Melbourne. :P
(EDIT: Nice try, baby spice :P)
-
Quick question: can I do bachelor of arts(psych) in caulfield? Because on Monash website, it says that I can only choose either Gippsland or off-campus.
-
What free stuff will there be? :)
-

The usual, bags, stationery, food, etc.

Make sure to go to Campus Centre, ask one of the kind university students or guides for the Peri Peri Chip Shop. You cannot leave Clayton without tasting Monash's famous Peri Peri Chips!

I shall make a note of this

ask for a small chips, but in a BOX - trust me :P

I think I might go (although I'm not sure I'm that close to picking a specific course), but I think I'm going to Caulfield; it's much quicker to travel there than to go to Clayton from where I live. Although Clayton definitely has a much larger range of courses. :-\

I think it's only at Gippsland
http://www.monash.edu.au/study/coursefinder/course/1712/
But you may be able to do it "off-campus" full-time (as you said), best to ask one of the Arts staff about going about that :) Or alternatively, submit and enquiry -> http://mars.mapa.monash.edu.au/Enquiry/DomEnquiry.aspx?CourseCd=1712

Thanks so much!

What's so good about these Peri chips? Are they like chips from nandos with peri salt?
-
Probably USBs too if you hit the right deps, just don't expect anything of huge storage haha
I wouldn't bother with USBs, they're usually 1GB or 2GB and probably cost them like 75 cents per unit cause they buy in bulk, if you need a USB, just get something like this:
http://flingshot.com.au/collections/storage/products/storage-usb-storage-verbatim-8gb-usb-flash-drive
It will be back in stock too, and you can get a coupon for free shipping :P

theyre the best chips you'll ever eat.
they literally melt in your mouth and you will crave them for ever.

Faculty of IT generally hand out 4gb USBs.

LOL is it worth a 2 hour train ride to go to?
-
LOL is it worth a 2 hour train ride to go to?
You're in yr10, might as well seeing as though you have minimal study! \o/ ;D
-
I live a 10 minute drive away but I don't know if I can be bothered coming lol. I already know pretty much everything I need to know about the courses I'm interested in and have been around the campus. Can't see any other reason to come..
Someone tell me in 25 words or less why I should come? :P
-
Someone tell me in 25 words or less why I should come? :P
Med introductory lecture by Prof Wayne Hodgson is always amazing and informative; meet current students with different perspectives and journeys; screw studying tomorrow; freebies, freebies!
edit: just checking, yeah that's 25 words i think haha

Med introductory? Alright, you've sold me! Haha. What time should I get there and where should I go? By the way, what's in the introductory lecture?
At the Alexander Theatre (Building 7):
10.15 – 11am
11.15am – 12pm
12.15 – 1pm
2 – 2.45pm
3 – 3.45pm
Whilst waiting, there will be current med students around to talk to (should be 14 in the morning shift and another 14 in the afternoon shift) :)
Content of the lecture changes every year, usually there is info on admissions (including more light on second round interviews), stats on last year's admissions (ATARs, UMATs in numerical medians and means), info on MMIs, info on the BMedSci year and the crazy MBBS/LLB.
-
holy shit is there an MBBS/LLB
-

Don't go there unless you're crazy.

It is. Med itself is crazy. Doing Law simultaneously will kill you.
Then again, Monash has a MBBS/PhD as well :P

I won't even get into MBBS at Monash but if I did, I would love to do the MBBS/LLB. I've read that you apply at the end of first year MBBS though and apparently you need some ridiculous average mark.
Anyone know how it would work?
Do the 6 remaining years after your first year and then go into an internship etc (assuming you want to become a medical doctor)?
-
Anyone know how it would work?
You just finish both degrees (7 years all up) and then do your internship and then whatever you want as per normal. tbh, I can't see many uses for having both.
Just emphasising how ridiculously ruined your social life will be if you choose this option. Either degree by itself is very hard to do well in.
-
Would feel amazing to know that you have an MBBS and LLB and you would be amongst a select few people who have it. I wonder how many people gain entrance into the course on average every year.
If you're as good at being an entrepreneur as you are at studying, you could start a law firm and start a clinic or private hospital :P

I strongly recommend against doing it. Seriously.
-
This is all hypothetical, of course. The likelihood of me getting Monash MBBS is almost non-existent, let alone maintaining an average high enough to gain entrance into the MBBS/LLB.

What about the MBBS/PhD?
-
What about the MBBS/PhD?
That's a little more reasonable and much more useful to have a credential, however, expect LOTS of hard work there when it gets up and going.
-
Well I'll be coming today. :) I intend to swing by the medical and science faculties while I'm there.
-
Well I just woke up. gg me lol
-
Just a quick question before I head off. Two lectures I'd like to attend are the Science degrees for high-achieving students and the MBBS admissions presentations. However, one finishes at 2pm and the other starts at 2pm. How long does it take to walk from Building 25 to Building 7?
-
Nobody cares if you're late, just go in the back way

See, for normal Uni lectures, if a lecture says it will start at 2pm, that means it goes from 2:05pm-2:55pm. That's how it is
Let's hope it is the same for Open Day ^-^
That walk would probably take you 3-5 mins (based off how long it takes me from Blg 25 to Campus Centre, which is Blg10 on the map)
-
It takes me about 6 minutes to get from 25 to 8.
-
I wish I had attend Monash open day... too bad no one is willing to drive me:( This time I was actually planning to go to chat to some representatives....not for the freebies xD MELBOURNE HERE I COME
-
The MBBS information session was quite interesting today. I especially liked Ash's little discussion on why not to do medicine. I really feel inspired now. :3

Does anybody know how many places will be provided for the Monash Scholarship for Excellence? And minimum grades during uni if you want to keep the scholarship?
-
I saw on the power-point that there are several scholarships. One for 99.95ers, one for 99.90ers, one for 98+ers and one for 90+ers?
Can anyone shed any light on how that works, what the scholarships include and which courses they apply to?
Also, tried the famous peri chips. They were quite good but I think they're a little over-rated.
-
Monash Scholarships page has all the details
http://www.monash.edu.au/study/scholarships/
For the Monash Scholarship for Excellence: http://www.monash.edu.au/study/scholarships/sir-john/excellence/
For the few that Surgeon was talking about, I think:
http://www.monash.edu.au/study/scholarships/sir-john/exceptional/ - 99.95
http://www.monash.edu.au/study/scholarships/sir-john/outstanding/ - 99.90
http://www.monash.edu.au/study/scholarships/sir-john/excellence/ - 98+
http://www.monash.edu.au/study/scholarships/sir-john/leaders/index.html - 90+
There's also merit & equity ones too. Just explore the scholarships website yourself.
-
Not much freebies today :P Only a heap of pens, a water bottle and a t-shirt. Looks like Monash cut their fundings.
-
WHATTTT... T SHIRTS? I WANT SOME T SHIRTS! Were they like, the white monash t shirts?
To compensate, I had a nice blue student ambassador hoodie, so that makes up for it, I guess.
BTW, guys, like, do student ambassador if you can next year, you get 100 dollar vouchers for the coles myer group. BEST THING EVER TODAY.

There were some in the IT-faculty, and I also scabbed 2 off the science faculty when I did my lab demonstrations ^^

Met lots of AN-ers today ad hopefully calmed down plenty of stressed post-yr12s, really fun in all :D

Crap, I just woke up. =/

Great to meet you :)

This was the moment that stood out for me today:
From Monash Open Day in the med dep involving me and a curry mum and her yr9 (or so) son:
Me: So, why do you want to do med?
Yr9: Well, I'm not sure if I even want to do med, I'm also thinking about engineering
His Mum: No, tell him about how you want to study medicine? To become a doctor!
*Yr9 slowly backs away as his mum gives him a very sharp look*
awks.
:(

Look out on my.monash for the volunteer dates, faculty reps advertise at different times as per faculty.
Ambassadors just stand around and help people in general, giving directions and that sort of thing. The faculty reps are the ones who give course info, advice and share their own experiences :)
-
Yo Vege, if you've got any spare freebies.. you.. know.. I'm here for you man..

I agree. Those chips have been the deciding factor for me to go to Monash, well done Monash University. I doubt Melbourne or any other Uni could offer anything better then that.. it was like.. heaven for the taste buds.

Ambassadors just stand around and help people in general, giving directions and that sort of thing. The faculty reps are the ones who give course info, advice and share their own experiences :)
Anyways, I'm a student ambassador this year,so I can tell you more about the process. So, generally at March, the my.monash website advertises to people who want to be student ambassadors. They'll ask you if you have any previous experiences as a volunteer, or if you're involved at any clubs at Monash. They'll take preference to people who do have those things, but I would say the most important factor is that you make yourself sound really really keen to help out and give something back to the uni!
You just submit your details, then if it's good enough, they'll do an interview, and passing that, congrats, you're an ambassador.
We actually do a number of things, such as giving out info at uni (like, bags and maps). The most important thing we do is ensure NO ONE, gets lost. But if you ask us a bit more, we also talk to you about your futures, career paths, life experiences at uni and such.
I think, the best thing we do is actually promoting Monash is an absolute positive light, and make your open day experience as enjoyable as possible. Hopefully everyone did enjoy the day (apart from weather).
(Yeah, we also tell you to try the Peri peri chips, you can't go wrong with those)
Oh, well, you do get nice stuff in the end. We got nice free breakfast and lunch, a certificate of participation and gift vouchers from Coles Myer group, $100, mind you. And you get to make new friends! So being an ambassador is really worthwhile, do try out to become one next year!
-
Just got back now, was it just me or was it not as busy as 2011?
Pretty great collection of freebies from the IT department, scored myself a water bottle (why someone at a computer would need a water bottle escapes me but still pretty cool) aswell as a phone sock. Was a bit disappointed that they weren't giving away the purple lanyards, they look amazing. Other departments had the standard pens and stuff.
As for course information, it was pretty great to be able to directly ask questions with those enrolled into courses. I'm honestly much more set on attending Monash and a getting into it because of this one-on-one communication :D so if anyone is having a bit of trouble picking out specific courses but know rough areas (eg, IT, Engineering or Commerce) then I'd suggest going to other universities open days :)
P.S, not sure if people saw me but I was the guy that got picked for qudditch and fell over :P
-
Not much freebies today :P Only a heap of pens, a water bottle and a t-shirt. Looks like Monash cut their fundings.
That I will predict will be the same at melbourne uni. In 2009 or 2010 (i don't remember actually which year) but I took like 8 glacaeu vitamin waters (only supposed to take 1). Then last year all they had was crappy lollies and pens.
-
Bloody hell, I'm more confused than ever by going to the open day :(
-
The most important thing we do is ensure NO ONE, gets lost.
Should have read this post before going, afraid i have a habit of this and as soon as i got there lead 3 Asian family's into a bunch of empty labs and accidently left them there.
still its a really nice place though, im sorta like nisha now :s
-
Have a shot at being a Faculty ambassador once you've done the Student Ambassador gig, it's somewhat good to make contacts in administration of your own faculty :)

MNHS (Medicine, Nursing and Health Science) faculty students - if you're interested in becoming a Faculty/Student Ambassador, there are quite a few hotties who are ambassadors for the MNHS faculty - if that sweetens the deal for you guys ;)
-
Couldn't make it on the day, had to do a supplementary SAC at school -.- (ON A SUNDAY !)
Anyone got some good info on the law faculty ?
-
Got advice for you. If you really really want to know, go ring up Law Faculty at Monash. Failing that, go ask ninwa, she knows stuff about law.
