Title: Insight 2012
Post by: perpetual on October 20, 2012, 09:35:04 am
Is the answer to this wrong, or am I missing something?

Miletta experienced a brain injury at birth that damaged the area of her brain responsible for the movement of her left thumb and index finger. Brain imaging at 2 years of age indicated that another area of her motor cortex adjacent to the damaged part was active when she moved the thumb and index finger on her left hand.

This phenomenon is best described as:
A. developmental proliferation
B. neural proliferation
C. developmental plasticity
D. adaptive plasticity

I chose D because I thought her brain was adapting to the damage, therefore adaptive plasticity, but the solutions say it's C.

I think you are right. It does sound exactly like adaptive plasticity (or unless I'm missing something here). Must be a mistake. It does happen. I had a mistake on one of my trials recently.

Our teacher went through this question with us. It's definitely adaptive plasticity  :)

Sorry to bump/intrude, but will we be asked a question like MC6? Can someone please explain why A is right?
And also with MC11, B is right, I accept that.. But I thought that we didn't need to worry about beneficence for this study design? :S

We may be asked on stuff like that.
B is wrong because not that many neurons die
C is wrong because infants develop connections faster than adults
D is wrong because function is determined before migration
..therefore leaving you with A. A is right because Profilration does happen in womb and millions of neurons multiply and divide during this stage.

Might as well include these things in MC11 in your notes as we all know VCAA are sneaky bastards.
