No don't do it in an expository essay, unless you're hybriding.

Would say it depends on your form. I'd say no for an expository essay in its purest form (essentially academic). But this barrier quickly breaks with anything else, such as with expository articles/pieces to be put in newspapers/magazines and so on. Basically what Paul said, but the definition of 'hybrid' can be a bit vague.

Generally wouldn't advise it, but for people who REALLY want to use a personal anecdote, then only use first person when discussing that example. Even then, try to delay the personal anecdote until the second half of the last body para.
