Title: RMS
Post by: vcestudent94 on November 13, 2012, 11:29:37 am
This might be a stupid question but is there such thing as RMS Power and Peak Power. If so do we always assume that we are given RMS power in the Exam? So to calculate Irms for example we go: Irms = Prms/Vrms     OR  Irms = (Ppeak/Vpeak)/sqrt(2).
Can someone please check if my logic is correct, its urgent! thanks

Put this way Peal Power (Ppeak) = Vpeak x I peak
So we know that Ipeak = sqrt(2) Irms and Vpeak = Sqrt(2)xVrms

Therefore Ppeak = 2x Prms
and Prms = Ppeak/2

VCAA are always specific about whether the value of AC current/voltage is RMS

It will be written as or if it is the case.

I don't think they would just write V or I unless it was in relation to DC

Yes but what about power. Is there no such thing as peak Power and rms Power? Which one is the standard?

RMS power. Never heard of peak power anyways, sounds completely pointless, and past VCAA exams always use power from RMS values.

Ok so always convert current and voltage to rms before dealing with power. Thank you
