Exam Technique
• Read the questions carefully!
• Write in full sentences. No dot points
• Always provide examples when possible to support your answer and understanding.
• Understand the meaning of these key words in the question:
Explain, evaluate, discuss, justify, describe, distinguish, compare and outline.
The Chief Assessor has previously stated that the best responses to questions were those:
• Where specific detail relevant to the question was provided, rather than responding with a pre-prepared or generic answer.
• Where students carefully read the question and made the appropriate response.
• Where students linked the case study/stimulus material to their answers.
Areas that are usually examined:
LSO Environments, Management Styles, Management Skills, Management Roles (POLC), Human Resource Management, Industrial Relations, Operations Management, Effectiveness & Efficiency (KPI’s), Ethical & Socially Responsible Management and Change Management.
Additional Hints:
Use all writing space provided and all questions should be written in full detailed form. In a two hour exam you should have time to expand on some of your answers.
Make sure that you have prepared a range of responses covering Human Resource and Operations Management strategies. Be prepared for questions covering all aspects of the employment cycle and the operating system of an organisation.
In preparation for the exams, you should attempt as many practice exams as possible You should read previous reports by the chief assessor to gain valuable information on how to avoid losing marks due to poor exam technique.
