Title: Is it a good idea to bring a watch into a VCE exam?
Post by: Voltman on June 06, 2009, 09:32:13 am
Hi everybody! I have my biology mid-year exam next week and need to know whether I should bring a watch into the examination room. At the moment I do not currently own a digital watch and I might need something during the exam to keep me informed with the amount of time that I have left.

When I do practice exams, I always look at the clock in my room from time to time. However of course, I guess it would be all the useful if the school bells at my school are to ring. They have not mentioned anything about stopping the bells from ringing, but ideally for many I'm sure they will not ring. So, I'm not going to rely on them.

Would the supervisor accept a Kellogg's reading timer into the examination room (found one in my cereal packet a few days ago)? It makes a loud noise when the time is up...so if I don't set it up properly I do risk my paper being confiscated and myself labelled as a cheat. As for whether its reliable, I'm not sure, I have only just found it and just playing with the buttons. Perhaps someone with greater experience of this timer can inform me?

I am also not sure whether the room that I will be sitting in for the exams will have any clocks. And even if they did, I probably would not be allowed to look at it/them. My school has emphasized, not to look at anyone or anything while doing the exams as almost anything can look suspiscious to the supervisor.

Would it be silly to just get a new and cheap digital watch because of this? I know of few people who have ordinary watches but they have expensive diamonds and jewels as the hands. I wouldn't feel right losing it if the supervisor takes them away or if a student just just swipes them off my hands. If something were to happen I'd rather lose a cheap digital watch that is mine. What does everybody think? Do you really need a watch to do well on the exams? Am I thinking too much about this?

Don't be silly, the clocks in the room are there for a reason.

But still, to make it easier and faster bring in your own watch which makes no noise, take it off your wrist put it on your table and you barely have to move your eyes of the paper to find out the time.

Wow you're really overthinking this. Just go pop out and grab a cheap digital watch from a $2 shop or something since you're not allowed to make any noise. As for the bells, chances are they'll be left on if you've got classes running concurrently on the day.

we were told on our exam assembly the other day watches are not allowed in the examination room. hence, why they provide us an enormous clock to look at :)

They're allowed. If you bring one in, you're supposed to put them on the table where the supervisor can see it clearly (i.e. top right hand corner).

I brought my Dad's mini digital clock into all my examinations, and none of the examiners ever had a problem with it.
It was about the size of a pedometer, or a tamagotchi (just square).

The clocks in our examination rooms were analog, and when none of your examinations actually started on the hour like they were supposed to, it made it a bit difficult to keep track of time without actually having to think about it too much.

Additionally, I was too short-sighted to read the clock from my seat at the back of the room with great accuracy.
I didn't want to bring my glasses into the examination room and waste time having to pick them up and look through them just to check the time.

I'd suggest buying a cheap digital watch, and putting it on your desk.
You are thinking about this a little too much though...

^Found this in the VCE Navigator:

WATCHES

"Wearing a watch of any type during an examination is not permitted. All watches must be removed and placed at the top of the student's desk/table, where they can be seen clearly and easily by Supervisors.

Where there is any doubt about the functions of any watch displayed, Supervisors are authorised to remove the watch from the table/desk and retain it in their care for the duration of the examination"

But yea, you're worrying about this too much....
