Title: Is it possible to do 8 science subjects in the first year and no breadth?
Post by: Higgs on January 28, 2013, 07:03:18 pm
Hey guys, is it possible to do 8 science subjects in the first year and no breadth?

For example:

Calculus 1                                    Calculus 2
Engineering Systems Design 1     Engineering Systems Design 2
Physics 1                                      Physics 2
Chemistry 1                                  Chemistry 2

(semester 1 on left, semester 2 on right)

On the enrolment screen, it only lets me pick 5 subjects for "Science Level 1" and 2 subjects for "Science level 1, 2 & 3" meaning I can only enrol in 7 level 1 subjects.

- Pick 5 subjects under "science level 1"

- Pick 2 subjects under Science level 1, 2 & 3

- You should be able to pick another science subject under the "science and breadth" section

I think the "science and breadth" only allows you to pick level 2 & 3 science subjects when my subjects are all level 1.

I am positive you can take 8 sciences in first year. However, you have to weigh up if it is worth losing some Lvl 2 and Lvl 3 classes to breadth spots (which will be more interesting and relevant to your major) in order to keep your options open.

EDIT: 500th post!1!11!!

Thanks, but do you know what sections I enrol the subjects in? Or should I just enrol in my semester 1 subjects and leave semester 2 for later?

You need to either call up (13 MELB) or email ([email protected]) the Science Student Centre to place a Level 1 Science subject into the "Science & Breadth" category in the system.

Manual intervention is required as they need to check if you have crossed the "125 points of Level 1" rule.

I went through the process myself last week.

I think you should consider though - are you sure you don't want to do breadth in first year? A good breadth does exactly what it suggests - it broadens your knowledge and allows you to think from a different perspective, whether that be an linguistic, economical or philosophical one. I've done good and bad breadth subjects, but when you're studying a breadth subject that you enjoy, you realise how glad you are to get a break from all the science.

It's a feeling that's hard to imagine when you're on the outside looking in, but I think the balance of 3 science/1 breadth is psychologically beneficial. 4 sciences is a stressful workload, while having too many breadths at once - and I know someone who did all breadth one semester - is not desirable as you're spending less time studying for the career you're (hopefully) passionate about pursuing, and that will make you unhappier. Also, a lot of Arts breadth subjects have essays due at around the same time - my aforementioned friend was really stressed during the last week of semester.

Long post I know, but something to consider for everyone.
