Title: Things you wish you hadn't done
Post by: |ll|lll| on February 14, 2013, 05:35:57 pm
I'll start off first.

This is an anecdotal account from a friend: never do marketing and management in the same semester.

If you take a unit because you think you'll enjoy it, at least make sure you'll at the very least...kind of like working for it too.

History sounded interesting to me...until i had to do work for it (was still pretty interesting to learn but the work sucked).

TL;DR Just make sure its the UNIT you like and not the IDEA of the unit. Philosophy...History...Chemistry...and pretty much everything else all have the potential to be interesting ideas to casually read up on but doesn't mean you'll enjoy slogging out a semester of it.

This. It's still a miracle that I walked away with an A in Roman History. I seriously got lucky on that exam (the parts of the Aeneid I read were on the exam).

Bludged first year. Put barely any effort into it. Probably attended less than 12 lectures all up last year, and barely went to my tutes.

I had all the answers for all my subs (to tute questions), put in the least amount of effort I could to get a pass. This will forever stain my GPA. Now I'm looking to do an exchange student program, and I know they take your GPA into consideration when going through the selection process. Also if you plan to overload, you need a credit average (varies for faculty). Luckily I made the cut, but still, i got lucky considering the way i handled first year.

Don't bludge first year, work hard and you'll find out which subs you enjoy more so you have a good idea of what you want to do later on. Furthermore, a stellar GPA is much more likely to land you an interview compared to a mediocre one.

Studying for Uni is way more fun than VCE, so don't think of it as a chore.

I did marketing and management in the same semester last year

very passable units but prepare to have a boring (and easy-going) semester

Don't fall behind by 36 lectures and then try and cram them into a week + revision for everything else. Bad times. Never again.

Ah, the feeling of accomplishment when I managed to get from one class to another without being stopped to be asked if I've voted yet...

Not something that I could really change last year, but spending approximately 360 hours (3 hrs a day *5 days a week*12 weeks a semester*2 semesters) travelling to uni on a train/bus or just waiting around for connections. 360 hours... thats 360/24=15 days.....

The lectures were fine but the labs were purely bland and boring.
The content didn't put much interest into me either.

Things I wish I hadn't done:

ATS2399/3399: The Self & Others

The 2011 exam was a "group exam". You were put into groups of 3 and given an essay task. You had 30mins to plan, 30mins to write it together, then 30mins to finish of your own contribution separately - then hand in one task.

The final product was awarded a "pool of marks", which the three of you then had to decide how you wanted to divide it up (ie who did more). If the decision wasn't unanimous (ie if even one person disagreed), then you all automatically got the same marks, regardless of who did what.... Way to take merit out of the equation.

Wait, what? Generally when I say things make no sense, it's hyperbole (i.e. throughout Methods) - but this literally makes no sense.

I know, right? Similarly no hyperbole when I say my jaw dropped open.

The major assignment of the unit was originally a discussion (ie 3000-word essay) comparing and contrasting the perspectives of a select list of theorists on an issue, current event or some quotation. It was then changed. We had to write a dialogue in script format of three different theorists having a conversation about a topic. Yes, and actual script. Probably more a screenplay.... with referencing. I soldiered through that and was probably better for it in some intangible way (trying to be glass half full here).

But that exam.... Lunacy.

Reminds me of that old TV show Golden Balls. Was there a lot of difficulty dividing up marks in your show?

I'm crossing over from Melbourne Uni to tell a story:

I was doing a science subject, focused on natural disasters which involved a group oral presentation discussing how to prepare for and manage a particular natural disaster.

I procrastinated writing my section of the speech and prepared it mostly in the room, while others were doing their speeches. It was only about a minute long, so I felt confident I could memorise it and do it easily without cue cards...

When I finally got up the front to say my piece, I made accidental eye contact with a mate, then briefly struggled to not laugh. Unfortunately, I completely lost my head in that moment, struggled to remember the sequence of topics and awkwardly stumbled through the rest of my speech - thanks to me, our group got the worst mark out of everyone in the class and I made a huge dumbass of myself.

Edit: Also left like 2 hours early - really getting into the spirit of university!

Ah shit, me too.

If you did club stuff enough club though surely you'd know when they meet or some higher up people in it, probably get onto them.

ehh i skipped joining clubs, but bought my msa card - how do i join up to clubs? was there a benefit to joining clubs at o-week?

(For both of you) There is a "club-day" thing going on during Tuesday. It won't nearly be as big as O-Week though. I also missed o-week last year like you guys and went to check out the club days but like half of the clubs weren't there. Since uni has already started, a lot of people in the clubs have classes and cant set up stuff. It's also no longer compulsory for them to do it, so, its more for returning students (like us) to join up again.

If there is any club you have a particular desire to join though you can probably go to their meetings (if they have them, depends on the club) or email someone higher up.

What clubs did you guys used to be in?
