Title: are pracs, tutes and workshops assessed
Post by: M-D on February 23, 2013, 03:07:22 pm
Hi,

i just wanted to know if pracs, tutes and workshops are assessed and how are they assessed? For instance, is a report required at the end of an experiment or are certain questions pertaining to the prac required to be answered?

thanks

It really depends on the subject itself.

From my experiences in Year 1 Biology and Chemistry, tutes aren't assessed though attendance is generally marked. (Yes for bio, no for chem although it's a good idea to go and see how the questions are done)

Pracs are assessed but in different ways. Chemistry pracs require you to write a lab report of the whole process. You are assessed on that along with the quality and quantity of the results you yield.

For bio pracs you have pre-prac and post prac questions (both on LMS) that you must do before the prac and after the prac (limited time) respectively. You may also be assessed in the prac on things such as your answer to a specific question in the workbook, your yield of results, or a graph you are required to draw.

I think with some art breadths, you can be marked on participation in tutes.

Same with Intro Microeconomics.

For chem that may include the amount of product (yield) at the end of the experiment, if you have too little of a yield you can be marked down (although it depends on how lenient your demonstrator is). So you have to make sure your measurements have been accurate, and you have performed the various processes adequately (e.g. not losing any product during filtration).

For Biology they may also mark you on whether you have been able to focus your microscope slide/ prepare it properly

Most commerce subjects have 10% allocated to tuorial attendance AND partcipation. So the partiularly nasty ones (like 2nd yr economics/finance/econometrics) have 5% marked on attendance and 5% on actual disussion participation + answering questions correctly in class.
