Hey!
How is everyone going with their SAT? I've cooked two of my five dishes, and so far so good!
Good luck to everyone for the next month or so :)
-
I was just wondering if you knew how you went in your SAT yet? I have heard that some schools have been told there score already? Thanks
-
40/45 A+
My notes from teacher:
Notes on chocolate cakes were almost identical. Notes on tomato chutney did not include
tomato- the main ingredient and the provider of acidity!
There is no documentation of your production in progress.
Otherwise you have done a great job and should be very pleased with your work.
(I forgot to take pictures while cooking, doh!)

Yay some other food techies!! Ah well my school has this stupid policy where they don't actually give you back your folio mark out of 45, the only mark you get is what VCAA gives you when results come out for us.
Saying that though, my teacher said if we got asked to apply to top designs we would have to have about 42/45 because we have a really strong cohort and only 5 people were going to be asked to apply and one of them turned out to be me ;) so I guess that's a bit of an indication but I'm just annoyed I will never get my numerical mark back >:(

Yeah it is odd how it all works... I got told my Media folio mark, but my Food Tech teacher 100% refuses to tell us how we went on our folio. That worries me slightly as I don't think it went too well...!
-
Oh well, it's all out of your control now. Just focus on studying for the exam and getting a good mark for the exam because a good exam can bring up your sac and sat scores :)
-
We where only allowed to know if we got a low, medium, high or very high! Which I don't really think is fair!!
What theme did you end up going with for your folio's??
Also if you did put your folio in have you heard anything back yet???
-

I did that I was a pastry chef opening up my own business as a rooftop dessert bar in Melbourne's CBD. I called it Moonlight Rooftop Patisserie :)
What did you do for yours? I'm also also glad I've finally found some other food techies on AN!
-
Oh that's fantastic!
I based mine around pears.... It was a sample menu for the pear association of Victoria!
Yes so am I, we don't have a very large food tech class as school so it's nice to talk to others about it all!

My theme was berries, I used a different berry for each of the five dishes. They all went really well!
-
Oh that's really cool!!
Did you end up submitting your folio to top designs???
How are you going with exam prep?

Haha is there even a Pear Association of Victoria? What items did you make? And a girl in my class did Berries too, except a few of her dishes were such an epic fail, I don't even know what went wrong!
Yeah I did end up submitting my folio. It's a pretty long shot of even getting in but even to be asked to apply is nice :) I'm feeling pretty confident with exam preparation because its my only 3/4 this year. I'm starting to run out of practice questions, haha. I've been saving the current VCAA papers for sometime this week. How are you going with it?
-
Nope... It sounded great so I made it up!!!!
Well I made
- pear and prawn tempura
- ravioli Of pear and mascarpone
- stuffed pork with pear an pomegranate salad
- raspberry poached pear with gold leaf!
- bottled pears to take home!
How about you??? With all your berry dishes??
Ah yes I think mine is a long shot too!! A few girls from my school out there's in so I think they will have a few applicants!
Oh it's okay... I have other subjects to study for but foods pretty straightforward
-
I mean desserts! I'm getting the two confused! Sorry haha
-
Haha it's fine! All your dishes sounds amazing :)
I did..
1. Passionfruit custard soufflé
2. This thing called a caramel parfait Glace which is like peanut meringue biscuit, layered with caramel mousse, salted peanut caramel, chocolate chantilly cream and tempered chocolate plaques.
3. A three tiered red velvet cake covered in fondant
4. A deconstructed lemon curd cheesecake
5. This one I made up myself that I called a "Late Night Desouvlaki" (yes, a dessert souvlaki).
6. Churros with chocolate sauce.
I think I made my class gain a few kilos tasting all mine, haha.
-
Oh my gosh!
That's sounds amazing!! Compared to what I did yours sounds so fantastic!!
I think in our class we all added a few kg's due to the good produced!
Was there a lot of people in your class?? What other themes did you have in your class??
-
Haha thank you but yours also sounds great! Um there were about 18 I think in my class? There were more who joined this year because our 1/2 class last year only had 8 in second semester and 7 of those were year 10s like myself :)
Um other themes were a going away party, berries, chocolate, a deli opening, organic farmers market stall and 1950s Australian cooking from what I can remember. What did other people in your class do?
-
Oh wow you have a few in your class we only had 11 or 12!!
Oh well we had a few different culture like Indian wedding, Greek, German and middle eastern!
A few dessert ones, lemon, orange, and a Alice in wonderland high tea!
-
Oh wow you have a few in your class we only had 11 or 12!!
We only had six! It sure made the cooking easy, we all got a good sized kitchen section each ;)

That's so lucky, we had to work 2 per bench, which really gets in the way of everything :/ We also had quite a few students who would mess around and don't care about the score they'll get, only picked food to cook.

That would get annoying... We all had an oven and a sink each plus all the equipment and things we needed, which came in handy when we had more complicated dishes.
-
Our kitchen is pretty big so it worked out well in the end!!
You only had 6!!! Wow that would have been a good class!!
-
Ours worked out okay because people would just rotate through as to who could share benches. And most people finished cooking in 5 weeks, but I didn't, so in the end we ended up getting our own bench.
In fact, I think that I never shared with anyone. I like to spread out when I cook so I just took over the bench on the back wall of the room which is massive!
What SS are you guys hoping to get?
-
What SS are you guys hoping to get?
Initially, I hoped for 40+. Now I have no idea whatsoever, as some of the folio write-ups were patchy and I have no indication of how it went... I'd say 35, but the scaling is terrible so I have no idea!
-
This image, my exact feelings. Hahaha ;)
-
This image, my exact feelings. Hahaha ;)
Hahaha! That is the exact same joke I have with my friends! That is fantastic, but sadly true...
-
Oh come on guys you did pretty well on your folios and they mean more then the exam!
You can get a 45 it's achievable!
I'm hoping for a 40-45 and if I don't get I won't be annoyed! I'll just be happy with whatever!
-

Haha yeah I know but if you bomb on the exam then your sat gets adjusted and so do your sacs! Are you guys learning definitions word for word for the exam?
-
Don't stress about it! You won't bomb out you clearly know your stuff!!
Umm no because if you get in the exam and you think you know it word for word and it doesn't look right you could second guess yourself and spend too much time on it or change it to the wrong answer!
-
Good point 8) I just did the 2012 paper and tried to correct is using the examiners report and going by their answers I think I would have got 93/100. But there were some answers that I wrote that weren't there but I checked in my textbook and I think they're right. Are the responses on the examiners report usually the more common ones? Like for the listing questions? Because that's where I had different answers
-
Usually the examiner reports are a list of what people wrote on the exam last year! What you wrote could be right but maybe no one wrote it last year
-
Haha hopefully! I usually remember more of the wacky concepts and reasons for topics in food tech, so that's probably why some of my answers weren't there 8)
Have you done many practice exams?
-
Just a few not many!
How about you??
-
I should have paced myself more, I'm starting to run out of questions.. Time to re do some papers I think ::)
I've done all the insight, TSSM, and Home Economics Victoria ones for the current study design and the 2010 and 2012 VCAA ones. The 2011 one is on the to-do list for tomorrow :)
-
Wow!!
I'm so unprepared compared to you... I think I have done three!!!
Ahh now I'm nervous
-
Finally found other food techies :)
I plan to start exam prep once I finish PE on Thursday

Not to mention the responsibilities of each level of government in food safety..

Ooo now you can't forget natural food components!! Very important :))
-
And complex processess

Words cannot express my love for the responsibilities of government in ensuring food safety..

Hey has anyone heard of any really cool folio themes!!! I love hearing about what people have done!!

I did an Australia Day BBQ lunch for mine

There was someone in my class who chose childhood memories. He chose foods that lots of kids eat, and re-designed them for a more adult audience. His dishes were fantastic.

I was going to do that! Spooky :) I'm glad I chose a rooftop dessert bar, who doesn't love creating a dessert souvlaki??

A dessert souvlaki? That sounds both delicious and confusing! What was it made of?
-
Ooo what did you make for your Australian day theme??
We had one girl base her's on rum which is kinda cool!
-

It was a crepe instead of bread, custard instead of garlic sauce, brownie instead of meat, dehydrated strawberries instead of tomato and toffee instead of lettuce. It tasted a bit weird but VCAA don't need to know that ;)
-

I made sausage rolls, party pies, steak sandwich with tomato chutney, vanilla slice and pavlova with ice cream
-
That dessert souvlaki sounds very.... Interesting!
Oh wow that Australia Day BBQ sounds great!!
-
You guys making interesting shit, mine was 2 cakes, sausage rolls, chutney, and beef risotto :(
-

It's interesting that you say that. A couple of us wanted to make foods like that, but our teacher refused to let us. She said that our folios would only get a good mark if we made foods that you wouldn't just find in a cafe or supermarket. It made choosing recipes difficult!
-

So long as we had the amount of complex processes and preservatives, my teacher didn't mind
-
It might depend on the school and area you live in.. We go to Padua college in mornington and our teacher allowed people to go down that path but pushed the stronger students to branch out into different and more difficult recipes
-
What I actually mean ( seeing as what I said originally didn't make sense)
Is that every teacher is different and they teach differently so you can have a range of way a folio is done! If that makes more sense then before
-
So apparently our food folios have been short listed and people have been sent letters! Has anyone heard of this? ;)
-
If you mean short listed for top designs, then I'm not surprised because successful applicants for top designs get notified around January according to the application form for top designs.
-
Yes that's exactly what I mean!
Well according to the vcaa website successful participants are notified around the 1st of December... I was simply wondering as it's only early November
-
According to the photocopy I have of the top designs application page, it says that short listed applicants will need to deliver their folios to VCAA by early December for selection. So it's probably to give short listed applicants the opportunity to make sure that their folios are available/they will be available to deliver their folio to VCAA at the required time.
Out of interest, did you receive a letter yourself from VCAA saying you were short listed or did your teacher and then they just told you?
-
I received the letter in the mail from the vcaa!
It doesn't go through your school at all!
-

Congrats! Next hurdle to get over, getting into top designs!
-
Oh thank you... But I don't think I will get in!!! But it's nice to be recognized for all the bloody hard work that went into it!
-
Oh well you don't know that you definitely won't, you're just one step closer to getting in :) my teacher also sent mine as an application but I haven't been at home for a few days so I don't know if I was also lucky enough to get a letter 8) probably not, haha.. I'm just glad that I got asked to apply though, that's enough recognition for my all hard work for me ;D
-
I'm sure you will! Your idea is fabulous especially because you didn't focus on just one berry and your very proactive with all the practice exams so I'm sure you will get short listed
-
So how's everyone's exam prep going?
-
Pretty well. I did a practice exam this morning and I'm feeling pretty good about things. But come Thursday night and I will be so nervous for Friday morning!
I'm just glad the exam is in the morning so we can get it out of the way! How are you going with it?
-
I'm working on definitions at the moment
-

I've got two exams before it, so Food has lost priority... By Friday though, hopefully I will have found some time to go over the tougher areas (FSANZ, Food Standards Code etc...)
-
I'm working on definitions at the moment
I should do that, haha
-
Good luck everyone!!
-
I got my SAT back today!!!!! Pleased to say I got 45/45, all of the hard work payed off ;D I almost cried when I got it back :D
-
Congrats! What a big day it has been for you then with food tech. First the exam now this excellent news ;D
I don't know when I get mine back, I hope it's soon :)
-
I got mine back but no mark. Have to wait till results come out
-

Thats like what my school does, you get back the folio but no numerical grade >:(
