Title: Acquisition phase in classical conditioning

A question from an Engage exam asks to complete the following sentence:

In classical conditioning, during the acquisition phase, the neutral stimulus is paired with the ________ in order to produce the ______.

From what I know, during this stage it's the conditioned stimulus that is paired with the unconditioned stimulus to produce the conditioned response.

I know that the neutral stimulus is the same as the conditioned stimulus, but is the statement wrong is saying that it's the neutral stimulus? Or is there no difference? In the textbook it says specifically that it's the CS paired with the UCS. (and not NS with UCS)

The NS becomes the CS AFTER Classical Conditioning has occurred.

So it is the pairing up of the NS with the UCS to produce the CR.
