Title: I'm going to get a low ATAR!
Post by: WHYDIDISLACK on October 27, 2013, 04:42:06 pm
Hey, hey!

No doubt on December 16th, when I receive my ATAR, it'll be lower than 60.
I really want to do commerce at Monash University but obviously I'm not going to get in.
How hard is it to transfer? I know 100% I'm going to give it my absolute all next year and hopefully can maintain a high average.
I know there's a Monash College, where majority of international students attend prior to entering Uni, and I know there's a minimum ATAR of 70 and SEAS is considered, so hopefully I might make the cut off. (I'm eligible for a boost of 10). Would this pathway increase my chances of getting into Commerce, or should I do Accounting at RMIT and see if I can transfer after 1 year or so?
I guess I just need reassurance that there are pathways into my ideal course.

Thank you.

You have high goals, but low expectations. Why? Dont be so negative! You still have a few days to turn it around! I was a bit like you too, wanting to get into Comm at Monash but got relatively close, but not close enough. I'm now at Monash 2 years into an Arts degree with which I have a love/hate relationship with, wondering if I still want to get into Comm. I did have a look at the DoT's program previously and you still have to maintain an average of 70 to get a transfer into Comm, so it's still not guaranteed and a lot of work. My advice to you is to try Commerce at Deakin, or like you said Accounting at RMIT, either way you'd have to do work, but in entering a degree you are more guaranteed to finish with one, then having started the Monash College program and not get in and end up with just that diploma. If you go to Deakin or RMIT you can still try transferring, and if you dont get in you still have the ability to continue on with your course and finish the degree.

There's no possible way you can know that with all honesty. Don't waste time looking forward to the future just yet, that won't change anything. Focus on there here and now. Focus on changing this outcome, not the perceived future outcome itself.

You need somewhere around ~70 to transfer depending on your ATAR and which uni you come from (anecdotally).

The short answer is that it isn't easy but it isn't hard either. You'll need to put in consistent work that might be slightly above your average student (a lot of people tend to really drop the ball and get lazy, so, average might not be as pro as you think). I've never heard of the Monash college thing, do you have more information on it? I honestly thought it was for people who haven't done VCE before.

As SBC said, your best bet is just to do commerce at another university. You'll actually be doing what you want (commerce) and right off the bat you'll get experience in what commerce is *really* like which will help you decide if its really for you (a lot of people change their mind and thats OK). It's more advantageous (annecdotally) for your transfer application because they've seen you can succeed in commerce. Also, Monash will credit you for the commerce units (usually) done at another uni. So, if you do accounting 101 at RMIT, you wont need to retake it at Monash, you can go straight into the next level. If you do an unrelated degree, you will have to start from the bottom.

TL;DR Try get into commerce somewhere, do well there then transfer over.
