Hi guys :)
Okay, so I've decided to do Specialist Maths 3/4 in year 12 next year. I'll be doing Methods 3/4 alongside Specialist, in addition to Chem & English. I just had a few queries as to what I should do considering I have not done General maths advanced. Should I purchase a general maths advanced textbook & spend time over the summer revising some of the 1/2 work?
I'm doing Spesh via Distance Ed, so I'll be getting a tutor. Would a private tutor be good or should I attend TSFX masterclasses? I'm a pretty competent Math student, so that's why I've decided to pick up Specialist.
Thanks for your help! Any input as to tips would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone here has done Spesh via distance ed, could you please give me some tips on whether its good or not, pros/cons, and what I should do to compensate for the fact that I don't have a teacher (directly).
Thanks

Ooh, I've heard otherwise. Any other reccomendations?? I'd consider getting private tutoring maybe..

Yeah I'll probably be getting a headstart for Specialist Maths. I just really want Methods & Spesh to be in my top 4, and Further to go down to my bottom 2.

That's great... My advice for the whole year: you should put constant effort on spesh..if you take your hands off for a week, then you might feel rusty..that was one of the mistakes I made because I had to deal with English a lot

Yeah definitely. I completely understand. I'm going to purchase study guides and do them every week, work through textbook qs and make sure I consolidate everything. The only thing I'm comfortable about Spesh is that if worst comes to worst, the springboard is I can sort of rely on the 10 mark scaling. But nevertheless, I'm going to work hard on it :) Thanks BigAl

The key thing my teacher basically emphasised like mentioned above, is to never just stop doing it. If you've got assessment coming up for a subject, throwing it aside isn't really an option. One real good thing about spec is that all of its topics overlap (except for complex once you're done with geometry) so if you just keep up with what you're doing then everything should stay smoooooooooth.

I've never had any sort of tutor, but if I were going to choose I'd take a math tutor from this site before I got a tutor that wasn't a recent ex-student. I mean, for the level of math you're studying, I'm sure that a very high-scoring student would understand the math just as well as someone which a Math PhD. Moreover, having just gone through the system a private tutor has a fully recent experience of sitting VCAA exams and knows in detail the tips and tricks etc. I've never done any real math, but it'd be like English... You'd be pretty hard pressed to find a teacher that knew Twelve Angry Men as intricately as I do (and I don't mean to be a braggart, I'm just saying that a student will read the text a billion times and write essays on it, and do very detailed extra research etc etc etc), whereas most teachers simply don't have the time, motivation or reason to know a text as deeply as a top student might. Obviously the English teacher could probably write a better essay or has a bigger vocabulary or whatever else, but ultimately, the tutor's knowledge is just as sufficient as the teachers, but the extra experience of having just gone through the system might be invaluable.
Could be totally wrong, having never had a tutor or done any legit math, but that's my logic, anyway.

Why does a competent Math student need a tutor? :)

To be competenter.

pi because I'll be alone without a tutor. Also, it'll be much quicker learning the content with the help of a tutor.
