Title: Monash Clayton On Campus Housing Costs
Post by: WeaponX on January 14, 2014, 07:30:27 pm
Hey guys,

So I wasn't sure where to post this, hope this is the right one. I wanted to ask about the costs involved from living on campus at Monash Clayton. I got an offer for residency in a Hall, and the rent is about $214/week. My question is, is it possible to maybe pay for that with a part time job? I'm applying for jobs (should have started earlier in hindsight, my own fault for that one  :-[), I guess you could assume like $10-$15 an hour? I'm hoping to get into Bachelor Business Information Systems/Commerce, I have no idea what the contact hours are like, hoping maybe one of you guys do. I guess you could also factor in Youth Allowance so like $150/fortnight. My parents said they're happy to pay for it, but I feel guilty for like costing them around $9k a year, doing a course they don't really want me to do (curry parents :P). Hoping I could pay the bulk if not all of it myself.

Thanks!

You'll get ~$200 pw from Centrelink. If you could get ~$100 pw from somewhere else, I think you should be fine.

I think a more normal wage rate for typical part-time uni jobs is about $15 to $20 per hour. Depends what you do obviously.

It's cheaper to live in a share house than live in the halls. It's pretty common for first years to live in halls though, then move out into a share house once they've found their feet a bit more.
