Title: What subjects should I choose for bachelor of science at Melbourne Uni?
Post by: linda_minda on January 20, 2014, 08:09:31 pm
Hi guys!  8)
Funny that my first atarnotes post is after I've completed VCE....

So the uni enrolment went pretty smoothly until subject selection. There are so many subjects and I don't know if any are compulsory or what not. If I can get in, I want to do veterinary medicine otherwise I would like to major in Environmental science. What subjects should I be choosing?
 HELP!  :-\ :-\ :( :(

Oh god, I'll help if you edit that post so it's not in pink font.

I like it! It's nice to have variety. If you click on the Animal Health and Disease major (second link below) mentioned  on the veterinary science page (the first link below) you will see a guideline of first year classes which will help you with your graduate goal, and are prerequisites for later subjects. The third link concerns the environmental science course plan. Regardless of what you choose, your first year looks quite  similar, which should allow you time to decide what you're interested in pursuing.

Is physics 1 compulsory for the Animal Health and Disease major? I didn't do Physics for VCE so I can't choose physics 1.  :'(
Thanks!

Let's just stick to standard formatting, aye?

Except I'm going to leave Ballerina's post untouched wow you weirdo so much effort it's a work of art and I can't be bothered undoing everything.

This is oppression of creativity! I say we burn them at the stake, Ballerina!
P.S. check the UoM handbook entries for your majors and explore the subjects there to figure out your prerequisites. You will need Physics Fundamentals and Chem 1, 2,.Biochem and Foundations of Animal Health 1 and 2 by the end of second year to qualify for entry into the Doctor of Vet Science. There are six compulsory third year subjects for the major in third year, unusually. Remaining science slots are usually filled with DASC, ZOOL, MIIM, PATH and/or other similar subjects.

For environmental science you have way more freedom, so don't worry too much! They do require a first year university maths subject, however, for one of the compulsory subjects. Just check the handbook for the major qnd work backwards through prerequisites and you'll be fine.

In first year you can keep both majors open. You will need to take Chem 1/2, BIOL10004/5, a maths subject, and Physics Fundamentals if you didn't do 3/4 Physics or equivalent. Depending on the environmental science classes you take later on I would strongly suggest Understanding Planet Earth as well.
