Yo BasicAcid, I'm going with my little brother as he is apparently incompetent.  Our surname starts with P so we may see you in the Bsc thing or the Engineering Pathways but surely by that stage he will have acquired some degree of independence and allowed me to go and do my own work in the library.

1 pm: Not sure if I should go to the BBQ or Science Expo ?

I'm pretty sure the Science Expo is only half an hour, and I doubt they'll run out of snags by 1:30pm  ;D

free barbeque > everything else.

+ i promise you, you won't be following your itenary. It's kind of like, go to the first bsc intro thing, then spend the rest of AAD bumming around campus.

Don't forget to pick up your ID cards on AAD. Another day to get them is on Thursday I believe.

12-4:30pm @ Alan Gilbert Building.

Hey guys , do our parents need  to attend academic advice day as well ?

mine are working. they don't have that luxury either way.  :P

By the way....my student portal is not working?

I'd probably suggest they didn't come. Your parents aren't really included in your education at the university level like they are at high school, so it *may* not be received well on the day. You might also look a little bit silly amongst all the other students who have come on their own.

Are they taking our photos and making our ID cards on the day? 0:

yeah, it was a bit odd seeing parents with their kids at AAD. It was kind of understandable at the housing/accommodation info part but other than that, prolly best to keep them away.
(the housing info session is useless btw)

Yeah, they take your photo with a webcam and make your ID cards right away. The process takes about two minutes. It's probably wise to do it not on AAD/during O week though because the line will stretch half way across campus. They'll be making ID cards pretty much every day from now, so just pop in any other way and there won't be a line.

HOUSING INFO GOT ME A PLACE AT MEDLEY HALL DON'T KNOCK IT ;; But if you have financial security and/or a PLACE to stay don't bother going.

Thanks Stick. I just thought we might need guardian's signature for stuff and forms etc.
Do we need any identification stuff?

Thanks scribble. 2 minutes.... that's quick ! So where is the location for getting ID card? Once I get my ID card, I think I can apply for tertiary level concession card.

you'll need ID to get your student ID, so either a drivers licence or passport. You'll also need ID for your online enrollment.

idk about this year, but last year, ID cards were made in one of the rooms in sidney myer asia centre. it was pretty much get off the swanston street tram, walk into the building and it's the first room on your left. But yeah, not sure where it'll be this year. But just look for a stupidly long line and that'll probably be it.

What happens if we have neither a driver's licence nor a valid passport? I have both a learner's permit and a working with children check card. Should this suffice?

learner's permit is a driver's license is it not?

e, okay it's obviously not but it's the equivalent in terms of identification AFAIK

Not sure haha. XD

So who managed to get into the timetabling session for Bachelor of Science students? They really should've used a bigger lecture theatre.

Same thing happened for the "Arts as breadth" presentation. Although, everyone there was essentially only interested in languages. XD

Sick as, completely understand how it all works now.

Semester 1:

Physics 1, Calculus 2, Engineering Systems 1 and some sort of Commerce breadth for me.

DONT DO ESD1 I SWEAR YOU WILL REGRET IT

Unless you're doing a Chem Eng major (but looking at your subjects it doesn't look like you are)!
Title: Re: Academic Advice Day
Post by: scribble on January 22, 2014, 09:26:25 pm
i didnt take the subjects, but every single one of my friends who did didn't enjoy it/wish they took something else. :'D from what i hear, it's just a poorly run subject overall. everyone who took ripped it to shreds in the end of semester surveys. XD i remember one of the lecturers reading out someones feedback for esd2 saying "unlike esd1, this subject is actually worth taking" and the student cohort just rang with approval.  also esd1's not a prerequisite for most engineering streams, so theres not a whole lot of point.

I asked this course advisor at the engineering stand at 3pm and she said I need to do ESD 1 and 2. She doesn't seem to understand the course content etc I guess. But ESD 1 does contain MATLAB and stuff that u will need for ESD 2? So lets say if I want to do civil or mechanical, I don't need ESD 1 as pre-req but ONLY linear algebra, calc 2 and ESD 2?

You will *touch* MATLAB in ESD1, but you won't learn anything that will put you ahead in ESD2.
Title: Re: Academic Advice Day
Post by: Hancock on January 24, 2014, 02:12:36 am
Yep, MATLAB really comes into it's own in ESD2. Make sure you learn the material to a T, because it will be super super useful throughout your next 5 years, especially if you have a strong foundation from first year.

Reiterating. Don't do ESD1.
Title: Re: Academic Advice Day
Post by: LOLs99 on January 24, 2014, 04:27:07 pm
ESD 1 is just some intro into MATLAB? So do I have to study a bit of intro into MATLAB before commencing ESD2?
Is ESD 1 that bad after none of the people I ask here said is good or even okay...
Title: Re: Academic Advice Day
Post by: hobbitle on January 24, 2014, 07:30:31 pm
Yes esd1 is that bad and no you don't need to swot up on Matlab before esd2 just pay attention in class.

Cool! Any ideas which subject is good to replace ESD 1 then?
If I'm confirmed not doing chemical eng, then my plan would be:

Sem 1:
1. Calculus 2
2. ???
3. Physics: Fundamental
4. Finance 1 or Japanese

Sem 2:
1. ESD 2
2. Linear Algebra
3. Physcis 2: Physical Science and Technology
4. Finance 1 or Japanese

Do u suggest picking a level 2 subject in 1st year?

If you can find one, maybe choose an area that you haven't experienced before, yet interests you for some reason? I'm doing The Global Environment. It's the first Earth Sciences subject, and it sounds kind of cool for some reason. Plus, the Atmospheres/Ocean Sciences subjects to which it leads kind of sound pretty interesting too. Just browse the first year science subjects at the following link and see if something jumps out  :)

Thanks for the link, it is useful and much convenient!  I'm thinking of doing an IT subj as it might help in some ways for engineering. But which IT subjects is the best for eng? Can IT be taken as breadth ?

Any thoughts of doing level 2 subjects in first year ? Like will it affect my GPA because post grad eng requires an average  of 65 GPA in the last 2 years.. it doesn't mean an average of level 2 and 3 subjects right ? Thanks

:)

Wait, I'm actually being serious... I tried Googling it and nothing came up.

Never heard of that saying in my life lmao. What's it mean?
Omg I can't. I just can't. Never change BasicAcid. I am so done. :')

Nah it's fine. If anyone's read George Orwell's Politics and the English Language he talks about how there's so much redundant vernacular because people are too lazy to actually say what they mean properly and as a result the language is dying out. This again is one of those saying that you might have heard before but wouldn't remember because it doesn't really mean anything literally.
Title: Re: Academic Advice Day
Post by: Ballerina on January 26, 2014, 01:42:05 am
that makes me so happy. I interpret language in the literal sense too, BasicAcid. STOP TRYING TO CONFUSE US WITH YOUR CONVOLUTED ENGINEERING TERMINOLOGY, HANCOCK  >:( I SWEAR TO GOD

I recall an excerpt from a book that was written entirely in the unused corners of the English language. For example, it used the word 'kempt' because 'unkempt' is frequently used but 'kempt' is not. It used 'hevelled' as 'dishevelled' is commonly heard but 'hevelled' is not. Can anyone recall the title?

I thought the author was Ella Minnow Pea (as in A B C D E F G H I J K ella minnow pea Q R S T U V W X Y Z) but, no.

It's an idiomatic expression that doesn't actually mean anything in and of itself, which is possibly why it's confusing to a lot of people

It just means to learn something perfectly, to the fullest extent, down to the tiniest detail, and so forth.

Hi, I'm just wondering is academic advice day very important to attend? I'm an international student and the AAD will be on the 20th but I will only arrive in Melbourne on the next day (21/2). I pretty much know the course plan/ how it works/ credit points etc and I already know what I want to major in so is it still necessary for me to go? :)

You have nothing (or very little) to lose by going. At least you'll get to see, meet and maybe talk to some fellow peers and discover more about the vast array of opportunities available to you whilst at the university. :)
