Title: A Predicament with Credit Application
Post by: Aerith on February 05, 2014, 01:32:51 am
To my fellow Monash University students,

I'm in a predicament and I'm using the following example to illustrate my situation. I'd like to hear your advise, if possible.

Let's say there were two Monash University students, who were close friends.

Student A was studying Bachelor of Science, majoring in Computation Science and minor in Astrophysics, at the Clayton Campus.

Student B was studying Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems, at the Caufield Campus.

So one day, both of these students wish to transfer into Bachelor of Software Engineering. They are both fervent about pursuing the course.

Both students have completed two units and wish to apply for credit for these two units:

So both students were successfully granted a place in Bachelor of Software Engineering and applied for credit transfer.

Student A logs into his Web Enrolment System and views his online academic transcript:

    Unit Name                     Mark
    FIT1040                         EXEMPTED
    FIT1029                         EXEMPTED

    GPA:                              N/A
    WAM:                            N/A

Student B logs into his Web Enrolment System and views his online academic transcript:

    Unit Name                     Mark
    FIT1040                         74
    FIT1029                         78

    GPA:                              3.0
    WAM:                            76

In reality, I'm exactly in the position of Student A and my friend, is in the position of Student B. I have spoken to the faculty of IT and they have provided me with the following information:

The system processes credit in two ways:
1 - if you transferred to another course that was linked to your original course, for example, a course within the same faculty, double degree to single degree etc. Then the units are transferred over and this then allow the results to carry over and are calculated in your WAM.

2 - if you are enrolling into a course that has no connection to your old course then nothing can be transferred, everything has to be keyed manually.  This means that the results do no carry over and are not automatically calculated into your WAM.

The faculty of IT said they couldn't do anything about it - they can not override the credit system. I feel this is a bit unfair that my results are not being carried over to my new degree, but my friend's did - it's like a loophole. I worked really hard and put so much effort in these units and I don't want the results to be made redundant. These units are actually core units. After all, I'm not a student who is seeking credit from a different University/Institution - I did complete units from the same faculty and the same University. I pursued Computer Science as a major in Bachelor of Science, not as an elective.

The faculty of IT did say that I could talk to Monash Student Ombudsman. But I have no idea what the outcome will be and whether they do have the power to override the whole system just for one student.

What do you think I can do? Should I seek action with the Ombudsman? I really want the results to be carried over as they are core units for my prospective course

Your advise will be highly appreciated,

Best Regards.

I feel you, I feel you very much. First, you can try the Ombudsman, but too be brutally honest, most likely the outcome would be the same, why? Because the university sticks by its policies and doesn't change unless it HAS to for some unprecedented reason. I have had met so many "loopholes" such as these in my university career, with things that are seemingly absurd. However, things such as these are part of the university policy which is very hard to change. Your best bet is just to accept what the university has decided and continue on.
