Title: [Free help] Does anyone have any issues with IT Apps? I can (hopefully) help
Post by: nick_9_8 on October 12, 2014, 03:45:25 pm
Hola hola,

Just leaving a message here, if anyone needs help with part of the course, leave a message here and I should be able to supply an answer :)

I'm in IT Apps 2014, but am confident with pretty much all the coursework and this seems like a good way to test my knowledge whilst helping others...

horray

Why is it called 11 privacy principles when there's only 10?

Late response sorry, hope you still see this.

There are two parts to the Privacy Act in terms of procedures and I think you're getting mixed up:

There are 10 National Privacy Principles and 11 Information Privacy Principles

You don't really need to know these, but I guess it's good knowledge just in case.

Hello it's me Nick from your IT class, idk if you know me but I'm in your IT class and my name is Nick.

How much effort do we need to put in to get 50raws?

Can you explain these sections of the study design? I've never seen them in my textbook/learnt about them
-a brief overview of the concept of the OSI model for network protocols
-tools and techniques for depicting the interfaces between solutions, users and the network, including
use cases, via the Unified Modelling Language
-psuedocode (specifically how to write it - it just doesn't look or mean like anything to me so I can't)

Also, would you recommend learning the glossary definitions in the study design, or should I focus on the content more?

Your questions relate to SD, not IT Apps ;)

Okay, I know this is very late, but how did you manage to score a 50 in ITA? Any specific tips/tricks that helped you get there?
Approximately how many practice exams did you do? Any help would be great, thanks!

Hey there! I see that you got yourself a 50 in this wonderful subject. I too would like to achieve this feat haha. Could you please list the areas that you studied the most and whatnot?

I've studied the exams in depth, and kinda memorised the way that examiners want those massive questions answered. I'm not sure what else to study. Networks? Laws? PSM? I've gone through 2011 - 2013 VCAA (saving the last one). I've studied that set of notes made by a 50 student.

I'm not sure what else to do...

Cheers matey!

This seems like  good enough question thread..

Can someone help me with understanding Question 9 from the 2012 VCAA Exam. I understand how to properly get it into 3NF but I'm at at loss trying to understand how normalizing it in each form ensures data integrity. I've looked through the examiners report and the Mark Kelly postmortems but I'm kind of getting lost in it all. Also for a question like this, do we have to show each step of the normalization or just the final form?

Any help would be great!

NF3: Fields included in tables should only be relevant to the primary key

"Fiels that aren't  relevant to the primary key must be removed. Non-key fields must give information about the key and nothing but the key. In this case, that means removing "d_carRate" and "d_totalFees" from the drivers table.

This will improve efficiency as only relevant information is being processed. "d_carRate" and "d_totalFees" can be calculated in a query, and reports can be made after"

I hope this helps!

I'm at at loss trying to understand how normalizing it in each form ensures data integrity.

Data integrity is related to accuracy. If the data is accurate, we can trust it.

Separating lists of data enables us to more-accurately sort and filter data. (e.g. separating street address from suburb lets you filter for a particular suburb, whereas you couldn't do that before)

Including a primary key enables us to more-accurately retrieve the details of a record that may share a data value. (e.g. filtering LastName = "Smith" may retrieve multiple records, whereas filtering MemberID = "SMI0001" will retrieve the exact Smith we were looking for)

Separating tables removes redundant data, which means that the chances of updating anomalies appearing is reduced, making our data more-accurate (e.g. Member SMI0001 changes his address, if redundant data exists, the address needs to have many instances updated, whereas if there is no redundant data the address only needs to be updated once)

Moving calculated fields from the table into a query will change the calculation from being a manual calculation to an automated calculation - more-accurate (e.g. TotalFee would need to be calculated by the database operator as it's stored in the table - prone to human error. Whereas if it's calculated in a query, it can be automated using the Car Rate and Years Worked fields.)

In addition, you could also change the Years Worked field to Employment Date, which would be used to calculate Years Worked. This too would remove human error when updating, as when the data is stored in Years Worked it would require the Database Operator to change the Year for each record as the Driver completes another year of driving, a tedious task that would be prone to human error.

Also for a question like this, do we have to show each step of the normalization or just the final form?

Displaying your changes as a Data Structure Diagram would comprehensively show the transition from 1NF to 3NF in that you've shown the separating of fields, the primary keys & foreign keys, the relationships, the separating of tables and the removal of calculated fields.

Wow! Cheers mate...I learned a lot!

I just want to clarify some things:
- Doing all this normal form stuff is to increase accuracy, and decrease data duplication. This will increase accuracy as the user only needs to enter the data into the system once, and it reduces the chance of incorrect data entry significantly.
- Manipulating the system according to 1NF, 2NF and 3NF is just to get the data to its simplest form, and to always reuse data (and not dupe everything...thus more accurate yadda yadda).

Thanks mate! Could you please read my comment and let me know if what I said was correct? I copied my answer (for which I gave myself full marks). How would I improve?

Which question were you answering? Q9 from 2012? You'd require 3 different points.

I'd suggest that you addressed three of the changes that you made to the database.

All good! Does anyone know how deep we need to be with Laws and ethics and all of that?

Generally, you need to know the exact name of the law, including the year.

You should be able to identify that:

Privacy Act 1988, Information Privacy Act 2000 and Health Records Act 2001 are all about safeguarding sensitive data and information.

Privacy Act 1988 protects data relating to: Credit worthiness, Tax File Numbers, any Australian Government Organisations and any Private Organisations who turnover > $3 Million per year.
Information Privacy Act 2000 protects data relating to: Victorian Government Organisations
Health Records Act 2001 protects data relating to: Victorian Health Organisations

Copyright Act 1968 protects Intellectual Property from being copied.

Spam Act 2003 stops unsolicited electronic communication from organisations.

Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 protects people's Privacy and Reputation, Freedom of thought, conscience, belief and religion, and Freedom of expression.

Regarding Ethics you need to be able to identify the stakeholders in a scenario and consider the impact on each of the stakeholders in the scenario. You should also know how to resolve any conflict or tension.

Any help would be great!

Normalising it ensures the data is consistent. So if you update a record in one table, the record's details will automatically change in another. This ensures:
-There is no repetition/redundancy, hence less storage space is required.
-Queries process faster.
-Keeps data up-to-date, as it is changed throughout the database, and not just one table. So changes only need to be made in one place, rather than multiple tables. This allows organisations to abide by privacy legislations too.

In a question like the one you mentioned, showing all three forms in necessary. If you're still confused, look at the space given-  it's a pretty good indicator of how much working is required.

Edit: oops, didn't see the query had been answered :p

I know this is a lot to ask. But has someone compiled a rough list of what they are going to memorise and whatnot?

This is what I've got so far...I'm not sure what to add. As you can see...I'm really not sure.

- All Laws
- Normalisation rules
- Definitions of router, modem, web server
- SSL, TCP-IP

Thanks!

Hey guys so I've got a question from the 2009 VCAA exam, the answer says Privacy Act 1998 whereas I put down Information Privacy Act 2000. Is the reason why it's Privacy Act 1998 because the question doesn't involve government and hence is not fully relational to the Information Privacy Act 2000?

I don't know how, or if you even can, attach pictures here so here's the image on imgur (http://i.imgur.com/dLfVV6D.png)

Yep, the Privacy Act 1998 only applies to:
- Federal government departments and ACT agencies
-Private organisations: that turnover at least $3 million per year, or hold information regarding an individuals' health, or buy or sell personal information for profit (e.g. Facebook), or  are contracted to a service to the common wealth.

This guy doesn't work for the state (is a small second-hand car dealer, private business) , and he has an annual turnover of $3 million, hence he must adhere to the Privacy Act 1988.

Additionally, just to clarify further:
The Information Privacy Act 2000 applies only to Victorian state government departments or organisations, NOT to private businesses.

Hope that makes sense.  :)

Also another question, could someone please differentiate between Layout Diagrams, Mock-ups and Story Boards?

Thanks

Story board: focuses more on the relationship between pages of a website, and the navigation. Also somewhat summaries what each pages consists of and how it helps fulfil the needs of the client. A more detailed layout diagram will have the name of the webpage, client; the name and size of each file on the webpage (e.g. a picture).

By VCAA definition, there is no distinct difference between the two, however, a for a better understanding:
Layout diagrams: primarily focus on the position of objects in a solution rather than its actual appearance.
Mockups: are photorealistic, show exactly what the final solution will appear like. Contain the type, colour, size of font. Basically, they're very detailed.

Also, if you don't already know about this, vceit.com is pretty helpful for IT students. :)

Cheers,

ERDs show relationships between primary keys in a data base.
Flowcharts show the processing of a function.

It's better to be familiar with them imo, because the study design does cover these acts and the provisions fall under these legislations. There have also been questions in past exams relating to the provision indirectly.

Just want to point out that an ERD shows relationships between entities/objects, not just the primary keys. A primary key is essentially just a unique identifier for each instance in that entity. Hence why it is called an entity relationship diagram. Entity referring to the object (Person, Car, Customer...)

Quick question,

When asked to design something like the poll on the 2014 examination, do we have to draw how it is going to look (Like Mark Kelly's response: http://vceit.com/p/postmortem-2014i.htm) or just text referring to what am I going to put? (What's shown on the examination report: "Textbox for comments" etc.)

(I can't seem to upload to photos  :()

Thanks!

And for collective identities, apart from a logo, what else helps to build it?

You'll need to know very little about wired/wireless communications. There's only one key knowledge point relating to them, and you should refer to the Glossary Terms which tells exactly which wired/wireless communication mediums to focus on.
Wired:
Fibre optic
Twisted Pair
Wireless:
Satellite
Microwave
Infra Red
Radio

Having an idea of where each is used and why it is the right choice for that environment would be sufficient.

User acceptance testing happens during the development stage of the PSM (during testing) but involves a typical user of the software.
e.g. if you were designing new cash registers for Woolworths, you would gather a sample of common users (think 15-19 year old males/females who currently work at Woolworths) and you'd have them use the software and provide feedback.

As they're not software developers, they'd be able to give you (a software developer) some insight into improvements that can be made prior to implementing the changes.

Functionality/Usability testing is not something specified in the study design. Know testing in general. Know what makes good Test Data and know the procedures for testing.

Collective identity - Logo, representative colours, photos of the members at club events, reviews of club events, photos supplied by members.

Cheers Acid and Aaron. So do flowcharts and ERDs look the same when expressed as a diagram? I know that ERDs have attributes (squares), relationships (diamonds) and entities (ovals) but what do flowcharts look like?

Also another question. Question 2 on the 2014 exam seems a bit strange:
"A chat site was initially created for intranet use in a small company. The company has now decided to have an open section with internet access and add a multimedia option so that users can post videos and audio files. Explain how these two actions will affect accessibility". (4marks)

The way I understand accessibility is that it tests whether the website is able to be used by the intended users (special needs or technical access). I suppose you could mention that the audio files assist blind people's accessibility, but how would explain the open section with internet access? Surely the intended users could already access the site as they are the employees with access to the intranet... Not sure about this one.

First of all thanks a ton for the responses to my questions earlier.

Now I just have a few questions regarding the exam, for instance what happens if the question asks "Display one disadvantage" and instead I list several, also if I'm doing a sequential question with parts like a/b/c/d and I write something for 'b' but then find out 'c' is a somewhat similar question am I better off answering the question with completely new knowledge or is it better to just reiterate what I wrote in part b.

Finally are they're any answers to the VCAA Sample Questions

Thanks for the help guys.

Flowcharts aren't in the IT Applications Key Knowledge/Key Skills anywhere. They haven't appeared in any of the exams from 2011-2014 (the current study design). I know they appear on some commercially purchased exams - they shouldn't.

Don't spend time on them. They're completely different to ERDs.

MK and KK published answers to the sample exam after it was first published in 2010 or 2011.

Since that time, VCAA have released additional questions, which I'm not sure if MK and KK have produced answers for. You can find their answers at vceit.com

VCAA have never and will never publish answers to those questions, so you'll never get a definitive answer.

Some of the questions are poorly written, and so can't be answered in complete alignment with the study design, however, if you want to upload your answers I'd be happy to give you feedback/direction.

Interesting as both my textbook and revision notes discuss flowcharts. Good to know though. I remember my teacher saying something about "Flowcharts are usually the incorrect answer for multiple choice, that's the only time they appear".

Thanks for your response. If you have time, do you have any input on my accessibility question?

I think they are the same thing. They have all the information about fields; data type, description, field size, input masks, validation rules, and existence requirements. (I checked the vceit site, and that's what I gathered)...

Can I get a confirmation from someone?

Hi thanks for the reply,

The initial question was one I had, had for a while so if i come across another one and I'm still unsure I'll shoot it your way, also I had checked VCEIT and I just tried to check there again but I could only find answers to the SD sample questions.

Once again thanks for your help my IT teacher has been taking my schools duke of ed camp for the last two weeks including this coming week so I've had no way of asking him anything so I really appreciate your help.

Thank you! ITTeacher, you are the best!  :D

Accessibility should always be linked to vision impaired users, which, if I remember correctly, you referred to.

According to the assessors report for that question, it went on to speak about how changing from opening up the chat room from being an intranet based (closed) feature, it was becoming open, which therefore allowed access to a wider audience.

I would ignore the second part of the response. It would be unlikely you'd get a 4 mark accessibility question again, and any 2 mark question should be answered with vision impairment first and foremost.

Another question: What is the difference between a data structure table and a data dictionary?

The most important difference is their place in the study design.

Data structure table - IT Apps.
Data dictionary - IT Software development.

I haven't taught IT SD since 2013, but from my memory, a data dictionary would be included in the internal documentation written into code and discuss the data types in similar ways to a data structure table.

I feel this is another one of those ambiguous questions...
I would say connecting it to the internet allows a larger group of people to access the website and attracts a larger audience?
Or maybe the intended users are able to access the website from anywhere rather than only through the intranet?

I was under the impression that TCP/IP, 802.11, FTP, SMTP and POP3 were examinable - but most likely only in multiple choice, if at all.

As for topologies (bus, star, etc.), that's only in Software Development.

Thanks. Yeah I found it was easy to state the sound files could help visually impaired users but the second part was a bit ambiguous, VCAA probably realised their mistake.

Alright so I'm back again with another question. In regards to the 8 mark questions should I be looking to create a single solution that covers all of the requirements or are separate solutions that solve each okay? So far I've been splitting up the issues and providing solutions to them individually. For instance in the attached question for the second dot point I avoided the issue of dealing with the 3 months by suggesting that he just have a spreadsheet that holds the 3 months of data and no more.

Thanks for the help guys.

Pretty poorly worded question, in my opinion.

Regardless, ignore the "3 month" stuff. VCAA have used it many times throughout this study design, e.g. Find the highest selling product over the last 3 months. Answer: Sort Quantity sold in Descending order. (1 mark for Sort-Descending, and 1 mark for Quantity sold)

Onto that question, your approach should not be to talk about an entire solution, rather, you should just address the specific points. Subheadings are best.

e.g.
Country of origin: Sort country of origin field in Ascending order, this will return a list of snowboarders such as, Australia, Canada, Finland etc.
Who placed first: If statement to check Placing data. IF(Placing=1,15% Bonus, No bonus)
Haven't placed highly: Sort placing data in Descending order, this will put the snowboarders with the lowest placings at the top of the list.
Graph payments: Create a column graph comparing the payments of each snowboarder for the year.

The problem with the wording of the question is that two of the points tell you what function to use.
Point 1- Sort and Point 4- Graph
Point 3 is too vague. Better wording would ask you to find the lowest (or lowest 2/3/4/5) placed racer in a particular race, in which case sorting would work nicely.
Point 2 is the best written point, but it's still quite difficult to write about how you would do it.

If you want to make another attempt at the question, here's a reworked version:

ProGo is a travel company that sponsors competitive snowboarders. They want to develop an information system that allows them to monitor the snowboarders they sponsor and their payments to them. Specifically, they want to be able to:
- find all snowboarders from Canada
- review sales trends for each snowboarder's merchandise
- find the 5 snowboarders whose merchandise has been the highest selling
- find the total attendance of the last 5 events

Further to that, show test data for each of those functions. (It would now be a 16 mark question which is not practical. But it's unlikely you'd see 8 marks assigned to only functions - test data has been included in all similar VCAA questions)

1. Filter the country column to only include "Canada".
2. Not really sure. Do you mean create a graph to represent the trends? If so, a bar chart displaying the snowboarder's name on the x axis and the total merchandise sold on the y axis.
3. Sort sales column in descending order.
4. Sort date column in descending order and use a SUM function on the first 5 attendance cells in the list. =SUM(E1:E5)

Would that be correct?

Quick question,

When asked to design something like the poll on the 2014 examination, do we have to draw how it is going to look (Like Mark Kelly's response: http://vceit.com/p/postmortem-2014i.htm) or just text referring to what am I going to put? (What's shown on the examination report: "Textbox for comments" etc.)

(I can't seem to upload to photos  :()

Thanks!

You should draw, and it's preferable if you label how you're satisfying the criteria.

It's said when someone brings back a post to gain more attention, like in a thread you might not get many replies so after the thread hits the second page in the sub forum you go to your thread and type 'bump' to bring it back to the first page where more people will see it and potentially respond.

- review sales trends for each snowboarder's merchandise

What is the best way to do this in an RDBMS?
Query the total sales for each snowboarder for each month using a calculated field then create a report?
Is it necessary to write the formula in the calculated field or will a description of what it will do suffice?

1. Perfect. (although use the word Field instead of Column)
2. Review sales trends was included on the 2013 (?) exam. Review sales trends of Bike Models. The best answer is a Line Graph (which will show data trends). Pie graph will compare percentages of a total. A bar graph will compare totals. However, any of these would likely get you marks. VCAA are in the business of giving marks, not taking them away.
3. Good. Justify why.
4. Great. I hadn't considered the need to sort the dates. But you're absolutely right. Sum was the function I was interested in.

Thanks for marking those. I just realised that in excel if you sort the fields in descending order (A-Z) then the numbers are actually sorted in ascending order (because A=1, B=2). Would that matter on the exam, or would just saying descending suffice for numbers ordered going from 10-1 for example?

Thanks again.

For spreadsheet, does anyone know if Smart Filter is accepted as a function? There have been numerous occasions where the problem could be easily solved by using Smart Filter (Excel), which does similar things to a database query, but the official VCAA answer uses the long method of conditional formatting.

As an example, they want to find the item that has sold more than $500 that week. Smart Filter can easily do this by setting the criteria for the Sales column to be >500. But no, I have to use conditional highlight?

Could anyone give me some insights or advice on what I should do? Don't want to risk anything on Thursday.

Thanks so much!

Poorly worded question - in the sense that there's no obviously correct answer.

In my opinion, Accuracy is the right effectiveness measure to discuss, however, I'd expand the scope of the question to change from a dropdown list to a calendar function and allow users to enter their Date of birth.

Within the confines of the question, I think your answer is spot on.

What stage of the PSM is a prototype website made? is it during the design stage since a prototype website is a design tool that shows the appearance and some functions of the solution?

Edit: okay, I just learnt a prototype website is created during development... but WHY? It doesn't make sense! It not the real solution, so um, yea, could someone please clarify this?  :-\

Based from http://vceit.com/p/00-psm2011.htm

Development involves:
"Electronically manipulating (or coding) data to 'build' or create the solution following initial designs."

Descending is Largest -> Smallest.
Z->A or 9->1

Ascending is Smallest -> Largest
A->Z or 1->9

Use the terms in that way for the exam.

Ethernet is the internet cable. I've never seen a question on it though...

"Ethernet is a link layer protocol in the TCP/IP stack, describing how networked devices can format data for transmission to other network devices on the same network segment, and how to put that data out on the network connection"

Yeah. I have no idea what that mean. Oh! We need to know TCP/IP! I can't wait until reading time...its only then when I know whether I'm completely screwed or not...

Good luck buddy!

Thanks :D
I found a better definition though: it's a protocol and basically about how data is sent through a network, a node listens for 'silence,' and when it detects no transmission over the network, it transmits its file. Sometimes a collision may occur between two files that are being transmitted over the same network, so the computers resend that file.
