Title: Mechanical engineer able to work as aerospace engineer(from open day)?
Post by: qshyrn on August 17, 2009, 11:22:17 pm
okay, i went to the uom open day, enquiring to the engineering department why they didn't even have aerospace engineering...
the guy said that if you do mechanical engineering, you still do aerospace subjects , and can still work as an aerospace engineer...
he said the reason they didn't call it 'aerospace' was because it isn't strictly aerospace and the didn't have people from NASA coming in and teaching.
can someone confirm this info?

Ooooo well that would be a pleasant surprise :D Enough to even sway me to choose Melbourne over Monash. Yes, please someone confirm??

I thought aerospace engineers were automatically recognised as mechanical engineers, not the other way around??

Not really sure.

that guy fed you a load of bullshit

if you do mech eng at uom you'd have to do a post-graduate masters in aerospace engineering to be accredited as an aerospace engineer

aerospace engineering graduates, on the other hand, are accredited as both mechanical and aerospace engineers

wow, ok..
are u sure? maybe i should have said that he said 'its possible with a certain selection of subjects (fluid dynamics+other stuff i can't remember)'
anyway, he did not sound very convincing and didn't speak english properly (strong indian accent made it hard to understand)

Nah, you have to do the proper degree to be accredited as an aero engineer.

Sorry :(

You could consider RMIT Aero Eng, if you want to remain in the city. I know RMIT cops a lot of flak because it's not as established/prestigious, but when you cut through the bullshit of people trashing degrees based on the reputation of the university offering it, their program still produces a large number of graduates who match it with the people coming out of Monash.

yeah im  considering that as well... on the boeing site i think it said something about a student industry program and had RMIT listed as one of the unis, but not monash which was surprising...

Yeah, they might have a partnership with RMIT. Monash can't have industry connections with EVERYONE :P

Is there any where that I can find these stats for engineering and other courses between unis?

that guy fed you a load of bullshit

Isn't that what they are meant to do if they either:

1.  Don't know the answer
2.  Want to seriously persuade you to come to that particular uni (ie. sell their uni)

?

Are you saying you don't trust the Almighty Admin?  :P  lol  Jokes.

Don't worry, I would've asked the same answer since I'm interested in aerospace as well.  :D

I don't know of any post-grad masters at Melbourne offering aerospace engineering :S Are you sure they offer it??
