Hey Atar Notes,
I was just wondering whether if completing proof by induction in the GMA book this year is necessary for the new study design that I think is being implemented next year? My friend's from other schools seem to all be covering this chapter in the book, however when I asked my teacher if we were going to as well he said no.So should I be concerned that our school is not covering induction or does it have no relevance to the course next year?

Unless I am mistaken, the new study design does not affect next year's year 12's, it only affects next year's year 11's. If this statement is true (I am not sure if it is or not, maybe someone else can confirm), then proof by induction = university maths and hence not required for you.

Nah I think this was the case last year. Like, the study design impacts this year's year 11s, so next year the Year 12s will have to do the new study design for maths.

Firstly, as Euler will probably come along and say later, GMA is basically a separate subject from Specialist. Your teachers can choose the topics. While some are relevant to Specialist, some are not. And I'm pretty sure after looking at the new study design there is still no mention of any proofs, just the probability being added. Again even if you didn't do Induction in GMA and it appears in Units 3/4, GMA isn't a precursor to Specialist and all the relevant information would be taught to you in 3/4

... I would dispute this, but legit one hour ago on the train I said to myself, "I better come back later to let the this student know that GMA=/=specialist". #becomingpredictable #almostasbadaspiandphysics
But yeah - methods of proof aren't important to the specialist, new or old. I wouldn't stress - feel free to learn it for funsies if you want (inductive proofs are pretty cool, my favourite is the classic "add all the numbers from 1 to 100" one from Gauss), but if you're just going to learn it because "urghhhh, marks, study score, urghhhh" don't stress.
(Also, confirming Ned Nerb. Study design starts for years 12s in 2016 for maths, probs because not much has changed in them)

Oh that's cool, my GMA teacher(teaches year 12 spesh) keeps on going on about how important proofs are going to be next year especially for the new study design; I've had a read through the new study design and there are no methods of proof required. :o
When can we be sure of this or is this confirmed? When new textbooks come out? :P

Proofs are important in 3/4 specialist - moreso in terms of vectors, however you will be expected to do some basic LHS=RHS style proofs in 3/4 specialist. Nothing that requires induction, contradiction, contrapositive, etc. though.
Your teacher could be talking about 1/2 specialist, though, which /does/ have a massive section on methods of proof. This won't be required for 3/4, though.
When can we be sure of this or is this confirmed? When new textbooks come out? :P
We can be sure of this by reading the study design. If you're having trouble interpreting it, just ask your teacher or on here, we can help.

He is always saying he is trying to incorporate as much of Year 3/4 spesh into our year which is great.
I think he may be a little confused as he received a sample textbook for Spesh 1/2( cambridge ) and saw proof's by induction. Maybe the fact that it's actually called Specialist Maths 1/2 as opposed to GMA now has something to do with the misinterpretation.
I'll be sure to get him up to date if that's the case. LOL Thanks for the confirmation!
