Title: Heat of Combustion??
Post by: kiko98 on September 16, 2015, 10:30:46 pm
Hey friends, I've been really puzzled by this question

Which species would exhibit the greatest change in H value for its combustion reaction? Ethane or butane? Give a reason for your answer.

Clearly the answer is butane but I'm not sure as to why???

Does it have something to do with the number of bonds formed??  ??? ??? ???

Thanks in advance :)

As a result of being a larger molecule, the butane will release more heat energy as it combusts to h20 and co2, so a greater change in h value would take place as more bonds are being broken/ more energy released.
That's my best guess anyways :P
