Chemical species usually refers to a group of chemical that bears some form of similarity, like nitrates (any ionic compound that contains the nitrate ion) and hydrocarbon (organic compounds that contain hydrogen and carbon). It is much like a classification of chemicals based on their molecular composition, like classifying animal species as "mammals", "birds" etc.
