Title: [Monash] Could you take random subjects that are unrelated to your degree?
Post by: Orson on December 08, 2015, 07:26:18 pm
If I was doing Eng + Comm, is there a way I could sit Anatomy?

In a double degree you wouldn't have any electives from other faculties so you couldn't, unless you wanted to overload but in that case you would have to pay the full fee for the subjects which I think is like $3000. Why not just do biomed or science as a double with engineering if you wanted to do anatomy?

Is that $3000 added onto your tab? Or is it out of pocket? I want to have a go at GAMSAT (MD), so I'd need them prerequisites.

You're making life very difficult for yourself if you want to do Eng/Law (based of recent posts) or Eng/Comm and THEN want to do UoM MD pre-req subjects. You might as well do Eng/BiomedSc (as suggested) or some other combination. It's also worth noting that all those combinations are 5+ years (Eng/Law can be over 7 years!), add on a cheeky MD to that and you're going to be in uni for a long time.

Honestly, from where I stand, it seems you don't have much of an idea with what you want to do with life (emphasised by your current signature which lists nearly every course offered haha!). That's fine but in that case I'd suggest starting broad with something like Comm/Sci and then pick, choose, and transfer depending on what you like and don't like.

I think you'd benefit going to Monash during Change of Prefs week and sorting this stuff out with people who deal with course planning.

I can't do BioMed because I didn't do Chemistry...

Which is why I suggested Comm/Sci as a good compromise and broad start :) I'm not familiar with pre-reqs any more but I assume you'd be fine for Science. Regardless, I highly recommend you attend Change of Prefs and have some long discussions with those there.

they literally designed the melbourne model for ppl like you who dunno what they wanna do HAHA id say just do straight science somewhere and do commerce and law electives and for the science component you can do engineering and med-y subjects
this is actually REALLY common at melbourne in science

if you didnt do chem/bio/spesh/physics you cant do sci at melb though so id recommend monash sci in that case

You could do science and do 1st year chem then transfer into biomed if you wanted to. Or you could maybe do a bridging course in chemistry if you were keen on biomed.

I second this.

I lowkey feel like you're still unsure about what you want to do in the future and are keeping as many options open as possible. Firstly, that's perfectly okay. And secondly, hate to be that person who shamelessly promotes UoM but I think you should have a look into Science at UoM - it is flexible enough for you to do an engineering major while fulfilling MD prereqs as selectives + you can do commerce subjects as breadth. And you can do all this within 3 years.

Food for thought  ;)
