So during tech free exams, do we leave the answer as, for instance, 5g or evaluate it as 49? (this is in regards to the 2013 vcaa ex 1)

At the beginning of the exam, it is stated that g = 9.8 m/s^2 (in the instructions box), which means you will need to evaluate your answer without the g variable. You should confirm with your teacher though.
