Title: Shipwrecks - Acidic Environment
Post by: frog1944 on October 02, 2017, 08:16:16 am
Hi,

For acidic pH, I read the following reason for why it accelerates corrosion; "𝐻2𝐶𝑂3 in particular, react with the 𝐹𝑒, 𝐹𝑒(𝑂𝐻)2, and the 𝐹𝑒2𝑂3, breaking down the lattice structure and shifting the equilibrium generating more rust products."
Is it an equilibrium reaction? If not, does carbonic acid still increase corrosion? If yes, when we write equations for rusting, should we include equilibrium arrows or just don’t worry about it?

Thanks
