Title: Still doing Prelim content
Post by: Razeen25 on November 12, 2017, 01:36:07 pm
Hello! I just wanted to ask a question. It’s term 4 of the 2017 school year, which means it’s the first term of Year 12/HSC. However my school is still teaching only Year 11 maths content. Whether it be the General Mathematics classes, or Mathematics (Advanced), we haven’t even touched a Year 12 textbook. Our teachers say “it’s normal to not have started HSC content yet”... but I’ve asked all my friends who go to other schools, and they’ve all been learning the Year 12 course for the last five weeks. And now that it’s the second half of the term, I’m getting a little worried.

Is this normal? Should I be worried? Because this is 6 weeks of Year 12 maths learning I WON’T have received unlike students from every other school. :(

Yeah thats a problem - you should already have started the year 12 course. Have you talked to your teacher/head teacher about this? It could be quite crucial to your time plan, unless youre 100% sure the teacher knows exactly what theyre doing (but even then, its not really an excuse).

Is it because your class is behind on the year 11 content?? For maths, AFAIK, both year 11 and year 12 content is important to know, so im guessing your class is behind and your teacher doesn't want to continue on just yet.

Below makes more sense :)

hey!

i have an opinion a littleeee different to CyberScopes.

my school didn't start teaching year 12 mathematics content until about week 4ish, and finished the maths course well before the HSC. i wouldn't worry too much, because you don't need to have been taught the whole maths course before trials (teachers can modify the exam). trust your teachers — they know what they're doing, and you'll finish the course in time :-)

Agree with fantasticbeasts - Quite common to not start Year 12 content until a little bit into Term 4.

In fact, students who start before then usually haven't done the full 120 hours of study they are meant to have done for a 2 unit course in Year 11, meaning they technically haven't met the requirements of the Prelim course. Lots of schools do it and it is no big deal, but chances are your school is more in the right than their school is ;)

You'll start it soon, and you don't need the full four terms to learn the 2U HSC course anyway. All shall be well ;D

I started around the 2nd/3rd week as far as i can remember, but if this is the case, I stand corrected. In fact, it sort of makes sense since we had a lot of extra time around the end of the hsc course to grind through past papers and do practice trials aswell.

Yeah it's usually like 3rd-5th, depending on the school. A lot of schools also do parts of the HSC course during the Prelim course (where it makes sense) so that can extend things ever so slightly too ;D

I started MX2 5 weeks into Term 4. Given that, I didn't learn 2 topics for my trials. It happens and your school should be able to work around it. You'll be right for HSC :))
