Title: Is flight freeze response still in nervous system section of study design?
Post by: lleeea on January 22, 2018, 01:13:35 pm
Hi,

just wanted to know if the flight fight freeze response is a part of the nervous system or stress section of the study design? like im confused bc the flight fight response info is in the stress chapter of my textbook but i thought  u learn about flight fight freeze response in nervous system..

Mod edit: Edited unnecessary full capslock title.

Stress - it's studied as a biological response to a stressor. I think you're confusing it with the spinal reflex, which is what is studied under the nervous system section.

but isnt the flight fight freeze related to the sympathetic nervous system as well???

Yes, it builds off what you learnt in the previous unit about the nervous system.

It is somewhat part of both parts, however, in the study design, it is listed specifically under the 'stress' section.
"models of stress as a biological process, with reference to Selye’s General Adaptation Syndrome of alarm reaction (shock/counter shock), resistance and exhaustion, including the ‘fight-flight-freeze’ response and the role of cortisol"

You are correct in saying that it is connected to the nervous system section as it is activated by the sympathetic nervous system. Connecting these two sections definitely makes it easier to remember information :)

In psychology (just like in bio)  there are many connections between areas of the course. Being able to show that you understand these connection is highly considered. You will not be tested on which area of the study design content is in.

It is important to understand how the FFF response relates to the topics under stress and also how it relates to the NS - particularly the sympathetic and parasympathetic NS
