Hello!
Just wondering if we need definitions in legal essays. I'm doing a family law essay on domestic violence, so would i need to define DV, AVO'S, Family and domestic violence, etc
Also, do we need to outline what an Act does?
Thanks :)

Hey!
No, definitions aren't necessary - the marker will know what stuff means, like if you want to explain what an Act is; or in your case, domestic violence. Not necessary :-) In saying that, sometimes you can give a quick outline of an Act/NGO/other measure so it's easier to make a judgement of its effectiveness. :-)

But make sure you use the full word instead of the acronym the first time it's introduced :)

Alternatively, if you want to give a quick outline and assessment, you could state the legislation it was introduced in and quote from the legislation itself or a media release regarding the legislation.
