Title: Should I drop SOR 1?
Post by: dcesaona on March 30, 2018, 11:19:17 am
Hey all ! I have 11 units.

I'm doing well in SOR 1 (I got 17/20 in my last exam with a minimum amount of study and I also got 20/20 for one of my responses in another exam, again I studied the night before). But I absolutely HATE the subject and never do the homework because it's sooooo boring. How well does it scale? Is it worth keeping? If I do keep it I'm going to have to put in a ton of work because I'm not going to want to be doing it for nothing. In saying all this, I put a tonnnn of work into my other subjects so I feel like if 10 units only need to count is SOR even worth it?

Please help!  :)

Hey!
Well, I'd assess how well you're going to your other subjects. Even though SOR1 is a one unit subject out of 50, it still becomes a mark out of 100 (worth two units when it comes to HSC results) so if you do better in any other subject (that's not English) then SOR1 will count towards your 10 units, not the other subject. So I'd look at your performance versus your other non-English subjects. If you do better in SOR1, then you should definitely keep it!  ;D

They don't do anything like that with SOR1 results, it's worth 1 unit ;D

But it will count over half of other non-English subjects if you do better in SOR than one of those!

If you were starting Year 12 I'd say drop for sure, given you hate it. But given that you are already halfway through the year and doing well in SOR, it might be worth keeping as a security blanket? It's always nice to have that peace of mind ;D

It's ultimately your call - But in my view, you've invested at least some time in SOR already and it seems to be paying off. So, to make that time worth it and give yourself some peace of mind, it could be worth keeping :) there's no right wrong, just my opinion!

Hey there,
Not sure if this is true but my math teacher told me that if you do well in a 1 unit subject (be it a 3U subject or SOR1) and you don't perform as well in your regular 2U subject, your 1U subject can scale you up.

Considering that you're doing well in SOR1, I'd suggest it's great to keep it as a security blanket (just like Jamon said) just in case you didn't perform as well in the HSC (you never know, maybe NESA will throw us under the bus and make some of the exams harder than usual because we're the last year doing the old syllabus!).
