A message from Peter Marshall - Vice President (Administration)
***********************************************************************
I am writing to advise that following an extensive evaluation process;
Monash students will be offered Google Apps for Education collaboration
services (including Google email) from November 2009. Initially students
will have access to a suite of Google applications including Gmail,
Calendar, Chat, Voice and Video calls and Docs.
During November this year you will receive an email from the university
inviting you to opt-into the service. On accepting the offer, your
existing email will be migrated to the Google service. Access will
continue to be provided via the my.monash portal and the email tab. You
will continue to have a @monash.edu.au email address, but your email
service will be provided by Google and will integrate with other Google
Apps functionality.
Advantages of switching to 'Google Apps' from the current in-house email
system include increased storage capacity (up to 7GB from the current
250MB for each student), instant chat functionality, the integration of
email with online calendar and the ability to work collaboratively on
shared documents.
The adoption of Google email reflects the University's commitment to
using
the best technology available and to continually find better ways to
facilitate quick, efficient and versatile communication and
information-sharing capabilities.
Yummy.

On the subject of e-mails, is the address "[email protected]" correct for inquiries regarding their science-related courses?
I've sent e-mails to them in the past but they don't seem to reply (after one and a half weeks, I sent the same one again) :O

[email protected] is definitely correct.
Have you tried to email them with your UMEP account? Don't use hotmail or non-uni accounts, they tend to discriminate and it seems harder to get a reply with these.
Or you could've asked a really hard question and they don't know the answer to it and are throwing it around the office.

Oh okay. No, I didn't :S I e-mailed them with my Windows Live account; I had a proper name/sensible address and sensible subject. 'Sif discriminate.
I'll try again in a few days.

zzzz, I don;t believe they're switching. yes, more storage etc etc, but does EVERY aspect of our life have to be google, google, google.
They have created their own net browser
They will have their own operating system to rival Windoes by next year I think it was
They have Gmail
They have the phones
Google Earth
Search Engine
Point being, I think Uni's should retain their OWN one for that feeling of independence and convention? Or so that it's more formal, it is a UNIVERSITY after all, they shouldn't give into consumerism. It's like a large scale multinational corporation having its company email [email protected] =.=*. Monash is able to be "up to date" etc through their own initiatives, get the I.T students to do something as part of their "assignment" lol .
Ah well, at least its voluntary.
-
@xXNovaxX: they are retaining the @monash.edu.au, it will just be powered by Google.

Oh! Thankyou for that. I must have misread.
cheers.

Ha ha... I was just about 2 post this.
I was gonna write "Monash goes Google" XD
Google will soon rule the world... the only thing left on their World Domination To-Do List is to convert good ol' Bill Gates.

Having (virtually) unlimited inbox space will be useful. I've had to go through the tedious task of clearing our measly 40 mb inbox multiple times this year =\
The doco collaboration with Google Docs would probly be useful too for group assignments and such.

Me too. And now I've gone and accidentally deleted an email containing the topics for an essay due tomorrow which I haven't started, just because it was a big one. Sigh. I will definitely be opting in >_>
instant chat functionality
????
Does that mean we can go chat with lecturers and stuff? D:

You guys only have 40mb of space in your inbox? :o How do you cope? My sent messages alone would be twice that.

Google Wave!

... Just as a matter of interest how much storage space does other unis give their student accounts? :P
-
We have unlimited at ANU ;)

If you want, but it'll mean that you can chat to any student if you know their authcate ID. I wish I was around to see this change, seems like a positive change. The email system for students at Monash is fairly average, for want of a better word.
Now, all they need to do is replace the people running the wireless network...

can't wait

256MB at Unimelb. I have currently used 9% of my quota.

Just wondering, what do you use with the storage space that they give you in uni? Lecture slides?

I get mine forwarded straight to my Hotmail (though there's approximately 25 minutes delay). That way, old emails get saved on my Hotmail and I'll be able to look up some email if I have to...

Where do you sign up?
There was a 'beta' sign up on Blackboard last week. I think the registration has ended so you'll need to wait 'til after exams to see it. But then again, this is your last year isn't it? Guess you won't ever get to then :P
