Post by: BiologyHelpWanted on August 20, 2018, 09:51:03 pm
Hello, how can you solve this? My tutor went through it but I still don't get it.

Growth = that is the end product or can be made into the end product
Not growth = that cannot be made into the end product

All of them grow with M, while none grow with P

This suggests that P should be at the start of the pathway and M at the end.

More of them are able to convert O to the end product than N, which means we get the pathway
P>N>O>M

This isn't one of the options so we aren't done yet.

Option D doesn't make much sense as strain two makes both M and O, and that isn't the right direction

Option C
If we look at our pathway (P>N>O>M)
And the table, we can see that strain 1 can't convert P or N to the end product but can convert  O to M. This suggests that the sequence is "broken" between N and O - strain 1 can't perform N>O.

The correct answer would hence be option C
