Title: Contemporary Examples for Depth Studies
Post by: owidjaja on September 09, 2018, 09:57:51 pm
Hey guys!
I noticed that Legal Studies had this kind of thread so I decided to make one for Society & Culture! One of the syllabus dot points in each Depth Study is to provide contemporary examples, so I hope this thread could be a place where we can share articles and other contemporary examples. Obviously, I can't cover for all of the Depth Studies so it would be great if you guys could also help out and expand the list of articles.

Great additions!
It seems as though China is a good example for both positive and negative reasons. Alot of angles you can take with it when implmenting examples!

Hi hello conformity and nonconformity links right here (specifically the nonconformist town of Christiania in Copenhagen)

A Tour of Christiania in Copenhangen
Degrowth and Christiania: on Copenhagen’s collective living experiment
Denmark’s Christiania closes off 'Pusher Street' cannabis market
Drugs trade still flourishing in Christiania despite repeated police crack-downs

> Zimbardo's theory of deindividuation:
And also the Stanford Prison Experiment film- great way to understand Zimbardo's theory of deindividuation within the prison context.

The Conformity and Non-conformity topic honestly has so little resources compared to other SAC electives as it was newly introduced in 2015 I think. (I struggled a little bit to be honest) But hopefully as the years go by, more resources can be posted ;D

A few months ago, I added a link to an article on China and the Uighur people, but a few days ago I saw this post on Buzzfeed International. I just found it interesting that it has turned into a hashtag. Perhaps we could use this as an example to talk about the use of technology, but also how power and authority has almost become one and the same in China (remember, there's a difference between these two concepts!).

It's been SO long since this thread has been updated (apologies for that!) but I wanted to throw in a really good podcast for the Social & Cultural Continuity & Change topic:

Is Social Media Bad For You? - SimplyPodLogical #32

I think both Cristine and Ben do a great job in discussing the nuances of social media usage, which could be great contemporary examples! (And fun fact: they both studied sociology ;) )
