Title: In what pattern should I study my subjects?
Post by: Stringy on September 16, 2018, 05:55:32 pm
I’m not sure whether to either
• Focus on 1 subject intensely a day
• Commit 1 week to one subject for the next 5 weeks (I only have 5 classes)
OR
• Mixture of 2-3 subjects a day

What would be the most effective?

Hey!

When I did my HSC, I found that studying a mixture of subjects per day allowed me to really concentrate on them- but also avoid getting bored and wasting time. I had this mindset “o shit I only have dedicated 2 hours for X- I can’t waste any time”. If I were to study X for an entire day, I would be like “lol I have the entire day to study what’s the rush” but I end up wasting my time because I got so bored easily.

However, this really depends on you and what your study methods are :)

I agree that focusing on only one subject for an extended time is difficult for me. I find even just switching between 2 subjects keeps me more motivated.
Personally though I like to be flexible, for example I might start doing chemistry and plan to do maths later, but then I get on a roll with chemistry and find it easier to just keep doing that, then catch up on maths another time.
However I have a friend who sets a timer for half an hour on one subject, then half an hour on a different subject and so on. She's pretty strict with it, but then she might go back to a subject if she wants to finish something off. She is extremely motivated and it works really well for her, and she manages to do each subject for at least half an hour every 2 days (I haven't tried this though).
I think spending a week on each subject is not ideal, because as beatroot said it could feel like heaps of time and you may be less motivated, and also you could forget stuff from the first subject by the end of the five weeks.
Ultimately its up to you because different things work for different people. Particularly if you are doing past papers it may work to to do one subject in a day, but you can give it a go and see what works  :)
