Hi guys, which theme do you think this passage relates to:
"Rooke puzzled about that idea as he puzzled at his primes. He had never seen a black man, so the issue was abstract, but something about the argument did not cohere. Think as he might, though, he could not find a path around Lancelot Percival's logic."
I think it has to do with the power of one's conscience and the view of the other. Although, I am not entirely sure.

Hi, I'm studing The Lieutenant this year as well and I believe what you said about the power of conscience is correct.
It's something in Rooke (his conscience) telling him that Launcelot Percial James' logic about slavery is incorrect. Rooke is 'innocent' in the sense of seeing the whole. He has yet to see the mutineers hanged because of disregarding their oath, the abduction of the Aborginals and atrocities towards humans in general. But the fact that he already has this mentality shows what type of person he is, and gives an indication on the journey that he is most likely going to go through.
