has anyone ever done a subject over the summer semester?
whats its like compared to the normal semester?
-
summer subjects are usually completed in 6 weeks...which is half the time of a normal semester? So I guess the workload, contact hours and the speed of the course would just double up then. In some subjects, they would omit some parts of the curriculum due to the intensity of the course. People that take summer subjects are usually those that are behind in 1 subject compared to the mainstream cohort or just simply failed a subject. Some people would do it to get ahead or just to free up their load during the year for personal reasons.

I've heard my friend talking about something like this. But is it worth considering? Is it free? You can pretty much go ahead by lots through just working hard independently during the dec-jan holidays.

it's not free, it's about $1000~$4000 for each subject, i think very few are even close to 4000 though.

I didn't know it was that expensive :o
Basically it's just double (per week) whatever you normally have in Semester 1 and 2. So if you decide to take Chemistry 2 in summer you will have 6 hours prac, 6 hours lectures and 2 hours tute = 14 hours a week :P
And I think they only allow a maximum of 2 subjects during Summer otherwise it's an overload.

Not too sure about the cost, however if it was taken in a normal semester it would range from $500-1000 depending on the subject. I don't think it would go up to $4000 for summer though O_O

wait, was these summer subjects part of doing an extra subject o_o ?
because if it was, then yeah it's around 1.5k for art/humanaties subjects & 3.5k for law - which is towards the most expensive but i doubt they'd have it in summer, these are just the extra subjects you can do as part of CAP... hehe

If you are taking a summer subject at Unimelb, the cost will be covered by hecs....:):)
I did Linear Algebra in summer earlier this year. Definitely managable.

did 2 commerce subjects last year.....
there are certain circumstances where a faculty will pay for your summer subjects.
e.g.-if you're doing masters of eng thru commerce, faculty of eng will pay for the additional engineering subjects that u have to do during the summer.
pretty specialised case, but if ur doing the masters of eng pathway thru commerce, make sure u get on it.

ohh....and in regards to the workload....its not that bad....was a lot more stressed for me tho, cos had personal problems just before exams =S
