Title: Language Analysis SAC Preparation
Post by: dream chaser on March 22, 2019, 07:10:34 pm
Hi Guys,

So my SAC on Language Analysis on the topic of Pill Testing is just less than 2 weeks away. Any tips for preparing. For instance, how to write under the time limit. I think we are given 10 minutes reading time and 100 minutes writing time. Any other tips will be very useful to me too.

All feedback will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi dream chaser,

I'd suggest bringing in a watch to help you keep time, and to figure out beforehand roughly how far along your essay you should be according to every 15min increment. For example, if you plan on writing an intro, 3 body paragraphs and a conclusion, where should you roughly be at minute 30? Halfway through body paragraph 1? Start of body paragraph 2? That way, you'll be able to tell whether you're on track to finish.

I'd also suggest revising your tone vocabulary - I find it's one of the first things students have a brain fart on under pressure, and then every tone is described as 'informative' and 'concerned'  ::) You can also revise verbs that authors can do. So instead of writing 'author argues x' in every second sentence, you want to have a few different verbs at your disposal. I've got some vocabulary charts on my Facebook page that you might find useful: https://bit.ly/2TR4wFQ

All the best for your SAC!

I'd go through the newspaper or find random articles online and just start analysing. Even if you just write a timed paragraph rather than an essay. The best way to prepare imo is through practice and becoming familiar with different styles and techniques.

Also, +1 for bringing a watch and revising vocab for verbs (e.g. asserts, elucidates etc.) and describing tone.

I agree with all of the earlier comments.  As well as those things it would be a good idea to sharpen up your annotating skills and use abbreviations or notations in the margins of the pieces you do for trial analysis.  Make sure you can quickly identify main arguments.  Also, don't forget to test yourself out with analysing the images or other visual elements that accompany your trial pieces.
