Title: Do I have to do all of the 1/2 textbook?
Post by: TigerMum on May 17, 2019, 07:31:56 pm
Currently doing 1/2 methods and looking at going ahead of my class. I would just like to know what (if any) exercises/chapters of the Cambridge textbook I don't really need for 3/4 next year, and which are the most important that I do.
Thanks in advance.

Sections like Newton’s method are not examinable in the 3&4. Neither is Permutations, but they do provide a good background to have.

Focus on Calculus, Transformations and Trig- if you can get those areas down pat then you’re setting yourself up well for next year.

Thank you very much for your response. I am about to start Chapter 7 Transformations (yeah we are a bit behind), and the book says the first four exercises of the topic could be omitted. Do you think I should do these, or could I skip them?

They shouldn’t take long to do, and it’s better to be confident in your mastery than not. Remember, you certainly don’t have to do every question.

If you are going ahead it's probably good to just do all the chapters - although you definitely don't need to do every question.

Whilst some chapters are not relevant to units 3/4 e.g. Combinatorics/Permutations - they can still be of value just to expand thinking and also may come into importance when proving some concepts in 3/4 (although again not assessed).

Good lord, no. Doing all of the textbook is going to be so inefficient to your learning and you'll just burn yourself out. If you really are adamant about understanding as much as you can, read all of the chapters and do a couple of questions from each exercise, but you can afford to do every second question if it's very similar to the last or if you already understand how to solve the question.
