Title: Questions on Masters of Science (Maths and Stats)
Post by: jkay__ on October 01, 2019, 04:12:32 pm
Hey AN. I'm currently in Year 12 looking to do BSci (Stats) with a computing diploma, and was wondering if MSci (Stats) is worth it to do, or if my job prospects off a BSci/Compsci degree (provided I average a 75+ or 80+ WAM) are already looking fresh. How relevant would a Masters in Science be, and would it boost a potential salary anymore?

Was also thinking of doing it a few years into a job (so undergrad, then job for 4-5 years, then do Masters when I'm 25, maybe?). Is it common to defer doing a Masters?

Also, if I am not eligible for the concurrent Diploma of Computing (but still do the Computing subjects), would that impact my job prospects heavily?

Having a master's certainly won't hurt, but it's effectiveness might be limited since very few jobs in Australia require one (based on my understanding). It also depends on the role your after: most roles won't require one, but if you have one you they might consider you over someone else (who has equal experience as you) for a higher position. Note that this is highly dependent on the job. If your job doesn't require any stats, then having a Master's in stats won't really be of any use so your employer won't really care about it.

It's not uncommon for people to work for a few years then do a master's, since there's not much use for one if your job/career doesn't require it. So it's probably more practical to only do a masters if it's actually relevant to your job.

Industry, heard that a PhD would be much more beneficial for research jobs though. I see that you're also doing/have done a PhD, how did you find it and how useful is it for you?

Ah, so the focus shifts on Masters if the Bachelors is not sufficient enough to find a job (or if I want to specialise more in my course), and it's all dependent on which job I am aiming to go for, got it. Thank you for the response!

Then I reinforce what blyatman has said already. Very few jobs in Australia require a MSc, and on average, the marginal benefits of getting one are (generally) outweighed by the marginal costs. Would much rather suggest putting more effort into securing internships for grad positions than focusing on a MSc.
