Title: Corrosion?
Post by: vexx on November 15, 2009, 04:05:53 pm
Hi,

We have to know these two following points for the exam, however we have not done any corrosion in class/missed two classes due to my 3/4.

* Describe the significance of corrosion of iron in social and economic terms
* Explain the chemistry involved in the corrosion of iron and the subsequent formation of rust including the electrochemical nature of the process.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Vexx.

Anyone?

welll for the first point- in economic terms it can cause a lot of damage. If not properly protected against through paint, alloys or placement with a more reactive metal rust can cause entire structures to be replaced, costing a lot of course.

For the second point, im fairly certain but dont take my work for it that the equation I learnt for it was the combined redox equation of the oxidation and reduction of iron with water and oxygen.

Thats all i got...lol my exam is tomorrow... :S

thanks for that though:)
perhaps someone else can be a bit more specific with the second part?
goodluck for exam!

Corrosion of iron..Hmmmm..

I think it's something like this..

Fe ---> Fe2+ + 2e- - oxidation#1
Fe2+ ---> Fe3 + e- - oxidation#2
2H2O + O2 + 4e- --> 4OH- - Reduction.

Oxidation #1 and Reduction combined eq -

Fe + 2H2O + O2 --->  Fe(OH)2

4Fe(OH)2 + 2H2O + O2 ---> 4Fe(OH)3

And magically somehow Fe(OH)3 becomes..

Fe2O3.xH2O

Btw, are you planning to do muep chem at scotch college?

thanks for that, i sort of get it but still a but fuzzy but my teacher said she'd go over it tomorrow :)

hmmm, i'm unsure, most likely scotch though just the time isn't so good. you doing it next year?

Yeah, at scotch college too. The time is a bit of a bitch.. I think I'll just be able to make it on time..
